You do a good job here of showing that even with a lot of personal success, it can feel empty and frustrating without the approval of one's loved ones.

I graduated college with two bachelor degrees (one in women's studies, one in chemical engineering), and three associates. I had a little graduation party. My parents attended. I was deeply stung when my mother said that they'd only made the two-hour drive because I'd hinted that I had an announcement to make. Which I did - I was three months pregnant - and that she was very excited about that. My parents had virtually nothing to say about my college achievements (things I had done with hard work and personal effort), but they were very enthusiastic in congratulating me on the conception.

So, yeah, I can empathize with Peter here. Sometimes what a person needs is for the people they love to say they're proud of what you've accomplished and to mean it.
