Part 8: A Family?

“Come here, sweetie.”

Renesmée let go of Alice’s hand and ran into her grandmother’s arms, overjoyed to see her.  Esme embraced her grand-daughter tenderly and the lines of worry were softened on her face.  Alice was sure that she and Esme were thinking the same thing: Rosalie’s plan, and her real intentions.

“Nessie, get in the car quickly, we’re going home,” Esme said, smiling.  She led the little girl to the back seat and into the car seat, sharing a long, knowing look with her husband.

“I’m going to try to get ahold of Bella and Edward right now on their cellphone,” Carlisle announced, “I sincerely hope one of them answers.”

Once Renesmée was safely tucked into her car seat, Esme shut the door carefully and turned to Alice and Jasper.  He had instinctively wrapped his arm around Alice’s shoulders, and he seemed to be calmer.

“Are you coming back with us?” their mother asked.

Jasper looked at Alice and read the response in her eyes.

“No, we’re going to go around town and see if Emmett or Edward and Bella are in the area.  If Rosalie really wants to leave, we’ve got to give her a chance to leave safely.”

Hearing Rosalie’s wish to leave was as much a shock to Jasper, Carlisle and Esme as it was to Alice.  Yet the real reason behind her need to leave was even more difficult to understand.  What Nessie had shown to Alice and Esme broke their hearts: Rosalie was not happy and had not found what she was looking for in this world.  Alice thought of Emmett-he would feel so alone, his heart broken into a million pieces once he learned that his wife was leaving him.  It wasn’t fair.  Emmett deserved to know why.  Rosalie’s plan hadn’t worked perfectly, and there was still time for her to come back and explain herself to Emmett.  She owed him that much.

Taking heart, Alice placed her arm around Jasper’s waist.

“You should go back,” she said, “we’ll be back sometime tonight.”

“Alright,” Carlisle responded, nodding his head understandingly.  He let Esme take the wheel and got into the Mercedes, taking out his cell phone to call Edward and Bella.  As the engine came to life, Jasper took Alice’s hand and turned to her.

“Is this going to work?” he asked her.

She knew that if she could, her entire body would have been racked with weeping over Rosalie.  For the first time, she realized just how much she loved her: through thick and thin, whatever happened… like true sisters.

“I would have loved to have seen her decision earlier,” Alice confessed. “So much earlier… I feel so selfish!  I never saw that she was unhappy, or that her life wasn’t working for her.  Are we really such selfish creatures, Jasper?”

“We all are, except you.  You, selfish?  Never.  You are the most beautiful creature in this world, on the inside and the outside.  You…”

Alice gripped Jasper’s shirt fiercely.  ‘It’s got to be another vision,’ he thought to himself, holding her close.

“Oh god,” Alice breathed, her eyes wide, “oh no, no!”

“Alice?”  Jasper exclaimed as he took hold of her shoulders.  He could feel her fear hit him like a ton of bricks.  “Alice, what do you see?  Alice!”

“Emmett, Edward… Rose.  Oh no!!”

A tearless sob erupted from her throat as she fell into Jasper’s arms, the horrible, overwhelming vision of her brothers and her sister fighting to the death refused to go away.  Rosalie on the ground, crawling and trying to get away, and all that blood… Edward staring Emmett down despite a frightening, gaping scrape across his handsome face.

“Edward is still angry,” Alice murmured, her face buried in Jasper’s chest, “he’s going to try and hurt Rose but Emmett…”

“No, Edward should be able to read Rosalie’s thoughts and know that she did not want to harm Renesmée.  Why is he still trying to hurt her?”

“Edward is blinded by revenge, he won’t listen to reason… he knows he’s right, and Rosalie isn’t even trying to stand up for herself… she’s crazy.  It’s like she wants him to kill her.”

“No!” Jasper denied, pushing his wife back gently so that he could look her in the eyes.  “Where are they, Alice?”

But now it was Alice’s turn to be blinded: the nightmarish vision seared her eyes like a hot iron.  For the first time since he had ever laid eyes upon her, Jasper dared to shake Alice.

“Alice, tonight I promised you that all would end well,” Jasper said as he got her attention.  “But for that to happen you have to stay with me.  Where are they?”

Alice didn’t even have to respond: Edward’s deafening howl broke through the air.  The couple ran at full speed toward the sound.  They came upon a small square that smelled of fish; probably a fisherman’s market took place earlier that day.  In the middle of the square were three people: Edward, growling over a feminine silhouette; Rosalie, lying on the ground and showing no sign of fighting back; and Emmett, charging straight at Edward, his eyes full of fury.

The rain began to fall, pelting down in large, cold drops.

The entire scene happened in less than a second, but Alice and Jasper had never felt slower.  They ran toward Edward along with Emmett.  Jasper was faster, he blocked Emmett with cannonball force and pushed him back with all his strength.  Alice placed herself between Edward and Rosalie.  She slammed her hands into her brother’s chest to stop him.  Edward’s response was to take a handful of her hair and pull her head back and use his other hand to hit her in the face.

Alice had only seen this kind of furor in Edward’s eyes when James had attacked Bella.  There was an incredible strength within him now, and he could have ripped her scalp off in one quick move.  Then he wouldn’t even have to hit Alice’s face…

But that blow never came.  Leaving Emmett in the corner with a hellish kick to the stomach, Jasper had grabbed Edward’s arm and stopped him.  With his other hand, he began to squeeze his brother’s throat.  ‘No one touches my soul,’ Jasper bellowed in his head.

“Jasper, no!” Alice begged.  She grabbed the hand that continued to squeeze Edward’s throat despite the pain that was radiating in her head.  She felt like Edward wasn’t going to let go of her hair until he had ripped it off.  Jasper stood stock still, holding his brother’s fist in the air.  In front of him, Alice stared at Edward.  She was pleading and hoping, he was taken over by his murderous vampire instincts.

“Edward, look at me!” she begged him, and Jasper couldn’t take it.  “I’m begging you, listen to my thoughts!”

“Let me kill her!” Edward growled, immobile in Jasper’s hands.  Emmett stood up and roared like a lion, and Rosalie, poor Rosalie.  In Alice’s vision, she was crawling to get away, but now, she wouldn’t move an inch.

“Emmett, let Alice do this!” Jasper ordered, not looking at him.

“Listen to my thoughts, Edward,” Alice insisted, “Trust me and calm down.  Look at me and hear the truth!  Your daughter asked me to show you the truth.  Please listen to what is going through my head.”

“Edward, do what she’s telling you to do,” Jasper advised, sending out calm, pacifying waves in all directions.

Everything became quiet.  There were no more growls, not even the sound of a breath… only the cold, hard rain falling on the family.

Edward’s hand loosened its grip on Alice’s short hair.  He had listened to what Alice had been screaming in her head: the truth behind this betrayal.  Instantly Jasper let go of his brother and came to his wife, placing his hand on her lower back.  She intertwined her fingers with his, grateful more than ever to have him at her side.

Like a violent wind, Edward left the square, ignoring Rosalie who had been staring at him darkly, and Emmett who still had fighting on his mind.  The square in Deep Bay held only Jasper, Alice, Rosalie and Emmett… and a confession to be made and goodbyes to be said.
