The decrapification continues!

In furthering the expulsion of junk from the premises, I started to dig through a shelf of chemistry and physics books that I received after my step grandfather died. As an aside, the man was very intelligent and introduced me to the reception of Russian weather satellite signals that he recorded on a VCR and then played back into his 486 dx2 66 ( Read more... )

My dad (deceased) was an officer on the Attack Cargo ship Corvus (AKA 26) when it took "army personnel" from Seattle to Tinian (June-July 1945). He had told the story that the army personnel were army civilians and that one of them mentioned there was a device that could destroy an entire city when they were disembarking at Tinian. He said that none of the Corvus's officers believed that remark--thought the remark was some kind of joke and only knew different when they heard the news ~1 month later of the dropping of the atomic bomb. I would really like to obtain a "xerox" copy of the pertinent pages from the Oppenheimer biography that you mentioned you found as I am doing some research on my dad's experiences in the Navy in WWII. If you are willing, I can provide via e-mail the address you can send it to and reimburse you for the cost incurred.

Thank you for the prompt reply. It's most generous of you to be willing to scan the relevant pages and send them to me. My e-mail address is dermotandmaria@verizon.net

Thanks again!

P.S. I find the matter most interesting as you do. I had the opportunity a couple of years ago to speak with a former Los Alamos National Laboratory scientist who as a young man was on Tinian with the Manhattan Project. He was unable to shed any light vis-a-vis the Corvus and seemed certain the actual bomb material and components had come via the cruiser Indianapolis and via air on B-29 bombers which also were used to ferry-in Manhattan project scientists to Tinian. So, maybe we have stumbled on to some additional mystery! I live in the Washington DC region so I plan to go to Bethesda, MD where there are ships logs archived and read through the Corvus's daily logs for the appropriate period. If you like I would be happy to share what info I find with you.
