Nah, I'm pretty sure we're in the right with this one, man. It wasn't the most awesome show ever made, obviously (that would be reserved for Gunbuster :D), but it was fun and well paced. Heroic Age has a flair for the dramatic that you don't see much in science fiction anymore, as the genre has honestly become more introspective and moody since the early nineties. I'd be curious to see what the people calling HA pretentious think of Crest/Banner of the Stars.
Draw parallels to Simoun? Heh, that just... amuses, for some reason. :7
Pretentious? For most people using the term nowadays, I feel like Inigo Montoya, "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." It's become too much of a 'catch-all.' "I don't get it" becomes "It's pretentious." "I don't agree with the conclusions the series presents to the philosophical questions/dilemmas encountered" or "I cannot empathize with the characters and how they react to the situation" become "It's pretentious." Or "Oh no, they reference Nietzsche, that's an automatic 'pretentious' label..." -.-
I enjoyed Heroic Age and will most likely buy it. I'll grumble if they decide to make it sub-only (I look forward to/may be made uneasy by who they choose to voice Dianeira-sama), but will most likely still buy it. Hold up my end of the "gentleman's agreement" and all that...
As for Stockholm Syndrome to Animu..... Hey, at least we DID drop H2O eventually, so we can't be THAT far beyond hope. :7
