I love how you've distilled it all down to his need, and the battle between her absorption and his healing factor.

I completely buy that Wolverine would, could, eventually develop a resistance to the bad parts of Rogue's touch. After all, as a kid, he used to get sick. Not anymore.

Totally. There's a nice fic out there somewhere about them testing it, him touching her to help build up resistance, and I was trying not to cross over too much into that territory with this, but hence it being more about 'sweet' than 'tolerance', which is the more interesting idea. Of course, I couldn't remember what the original fic was called, and now I want to read it again ...
