I don't talk about Hetalia around them, I just ask them about China-Japan relations. It works perfectly.

My parents have forbidden me to wear Japanese traditional clothes. I even hint something like Nichu and there will be bloodshed.

3) Do real-life issues affect how you perceive the interaction between these two?
How much have you read into the real-life relations between the two countries?

Yes, my Yao is darker and haraguro and hasn’t forgiven Kiku. And Kiku is very prideful. So hatesex…

“Every time Japan is involved, there are colorful statements made about the pervertedness of Japanese men.”

Well, I think mainland Chinese’s views of Japan are mainly colored by the porn that Kiku puts out plus WWII. I think Yao would have a more nuanced opinion given his superhuman memory. As a human I don’t personally remember a period when China was a leading civilization but Yao would remember what it was like. I grew up with him as a Communist basket case. Our views as human beings are colored by our current historical positions.

I like the idea of Yao and Kiku being able to remember more/longer periods of time than normal people, but I guess - in my headcanon - there's still a limit to their memory. Er, I'm guessing I just throw them off like people in the end: they'll have four thousand years (and then some for a certain hermit <3) of history in their brain, but it'll still be colored/"tainted" by their personal emotions during that time period.

As such, I thought that the two of them would place more emphasis - in their minds - on certain periods/points in history. Although, now that you mention it, perhaps Yao would like to be (or is?) grounded in his accomplishments of a later millenia? On the other hand, he is doing so well right now! :3

Chinese people generally feel that there were certain dynasties which were golden ages, e.g. Han and Tang dynasties.

Though most Chinese people would agree that China is doing better at present than in the recent past, I would hardly describe the present as a golden age.He just doesn't have the cultural flowering in the past that inspired all his neighbors to learn from him yet. I'm not ruling out it happening sometime in the future though.

I think Yao is in a pupa stage, from the outside as a foreigner I can see a lot of growth going on but I don't know what's going to emerge. A moth or a butterfly? Will the wings be deformed? No one knows.

I'd hate to see Yao turn from fluffy cute to SCARY. But I think he's like that way (doubly if Yao is a SHE, unfortunate implications there...). Who would be on top in that case?!

In that fall from grace, Yao is rather bitter. Doubly for fem!Yao. A beautiful courtesan, fallen out of favor with her clients...
