Ugh! Do not listen to people giving you crap!! Every point you made is exactly right. Please don't let some jerks get you down - you know in your heart that you're doing the right thing and you should be so proud of yourself!

I think part of the reason I feel disjointed is because *I'm* surprised at the first month's loss as well. I wasn't intending to eat such that I would lose 19 lbs. I was just hoping to lose a modest amt each week.

So I'm probably oversensitive about it in some ways. Still, it irks me. It's one thing to say that 2 lbs per week is optimal. It's another to say that if you lose more than 2 lbs per week you're automatically doing something wrong.

I agree with this completely.

I weigh 277 pounds. One year ago TODAY I was 300 even. I lost that in one year.

I can not lose weight easily. I have to fight hard for every pound -- and it gets EXHAUSTING.

So I have given up a little bit. I need a bit of support and I will not return to Sparkpeople. I've had it with them.

I so use their meal tracker and exercise tracker and need to return to that. But the boards? the "support"?

No. They are non-existent in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think people say things like this because they're mean-spirited. Maybe some do, I have no way of being sure, but what gets me is the lack of questioning. I emphasized in my post (to which people were responding) that UNTIL two days prior I had been feeling fantastic -- NOT the killer hunger I was suddenly experiencing. So it doesn't make sense to me to assume that I have been starving myself all along. Something was different from what I'd originally been doing, and honestly, several people pointed out the carb-vs-protein angle and it DID work.

*HUGS* Post here all you want, if you feel like it. I'm a little leery of Spark right now myself.

From what I hear it's pretty helpful to keep 4-5 hours between meals. It gets the insuline down and so the body starts to burn fat. Plus, it helps to prevent diabetes as the pancreas gets to rest. Of course, cutting down sweets and such is good - and probably necessary. Other than that .. I think every body is different and for every body weight loss works in different ways. As long as you feel good about yourself I'd just forget about almost religious rules.
I think you're doing great! So - go you!

*HUGS* I am very proud of what I've accomplished so far, and a lot of that is because I feel it's healthy, it's GOOD for me. So I guess that's why this felt so -- unpleasant. I really feel aghast at the idea that someone believes I'm doing this in an extreme way based on the amt I've lost so far. It seems like we should make those decisions while taking into account all the factors -- not just the one that doesn't fit our preconceived prescription.

*ugh* I tried sparkpeople but found they were a little too fanatical about how THEY did things. I enjoyed their calorie counters and whatnot but I pretty much avoided the people as they tended to make me discouraged by my weight loss attempts because I wasn't doing things the way THEY were doing things. *sigh*

*hugs* All I can say is that you're doing brilliantly, and you're 100% right. We're not cookie cutter people, we all lose at different rates and there is no "right" answer for the entire population, only what is right for you.

Also, YAY for the protein helping!

As hard as it is not to let what some people say bother you - especially if it's from a source that is supposed to be offering support - I've experienced the same thing, and while the people offering this advice couch it in "concern", more often than not it was simple jealousy that I had lost more weight than they did. Perhaps that's the case here?

I'm still using Fitday, which was the program I used before, and it's doing a great job tracking progress, food journal, etc. I don't even use the Spark widgets because Fitday has them already. :-/

The protein made a LOT of difference. And I'm happy to say I just popped a chicken in the oven so that I'll have protein during the week (will, sadly, take the skin off, though -- I really LIKE the skin, but yeah).

I really do think people believe they're being helpful. Their hearts are probably -- usually -- in the right place. But it kinda misfires when you make assumptions while ignoring what's actually been said. I doubt anyone would handle it well when there's an allegation of doing something so flexible as weight loss "incorrectly."

I used to get jealous of the men in our WW class (I was a teen back then), because they lost faster than the women, and -- seemingly to me -- more easily. I can understand some jealousy. I don't know if that was the case yesterday or not, but I'm not without some empathy there too. *grin*

Yeah, it would be a little scary if you kept losing that quickly for months and months, but in my (not inconsiderable) experience the amount of weight you lose at the beginning can be dramatic when you're coming from really bad eating habits and when you weigh more to begin with. Somebody who weighs 150 and wants to get down to 130 should absolutely not lose that in a month. But for somebody to go from 350 to 330 in a month would be completely reasonable. Everybody's different. Go you!

There will come a day -- soon, most likely -- when I'll look back at this first month and want to cry because THEN I lost 4 lbs a week! And now I'm killing myself for 2! *g*

But man, seemingly small things like cutting out sodas when you were drinking 3 or 4 a day? At least initially, that really makes a difference.
