On my mind.

I haven't had time to devour all of the big bang stories posted so far (although I adored lemmealone's, and belyste's is the warmest, fuzziest EVER, highly recommend both). But I keep seeing notes about a great mpreg that's been posted. Haven't read yet, BUT ( Read more... )

"Generally, I do not find mpreg an enjoyable topic for fiction,"See, I disagree here, but only a little. *g* I can't stand MPREG. But in general, I have no interest in any topics related to pregnancy. I don't especially like kids, except fictional weechesters. Babies are not my thing, either. So I don't think it's any big surprise that MPREG is in the DO NOT WANT category for me, and I don't think I should have to put some kind of spin on that using 'nice words' like distasteful, because there really isn't a judgment of other people implied when I say I can't stand it. The 'I' speaks for itself ( ... )

you could generalize this post to pretty much any topic in fandom and have it apply. Just because I'm totally squicked by it and baffled by its appeal doesn't mean other people shouldn't love it.

Exactly, yes. I mean, I'm no more going to tell someone -- you, for example -- that they're "wrong" for not ever, ever enjoying mpreg as I am to expect someone else to tell ME that sometimes underage Wincest is awesome. For me, it's not EVER awesome. I just do not want to go there. Ever. So strictly for me it's a total NO WAY JOSE. But that doesn't mean this is the case for the next gal, or the one after her ( ... )

*nodnod* And on that we are in total agreement - your point is an excellent one, that there certainly could be some fantastic MPREG stories out there. I'm sure yours were among them! There is indeed a huge difference between personal dislike and the implication that all the stories in a genre are bad and so that's why they should be shuuuuunned. (Now, see, I just had a Charlie the Unicorn flashback. *g*)

Yup. It's a fine line, and a lot of people can build very convincing arguments why they think mpreg is bad, as a genre -- but ultimately those arguments carry a lot less weight when you are one of the (few, the not-all-that-proud) readers for whom mpreg is delish. Fine line between "bad" and "bad for me."

we can look at something and say, "I don't like this, I find it distasteful for X or Y reason, or it's simply not my thing, ick," and STILL recognize that this something might be someone else's thing, and that doesn't make them WRONG, it doesn't make the author less for having written something WE don't like, it doesn't make the idea less workable. This is pretty much my view of the endless slash vs. gen vs. het vs. wincest vs. insertyourkinkhere conflicts. A story is weak by its inherent weaknesses, not because of its very genre. The end. That said, we all have our preferences, of course. Mpreg, so not my thing and right now I'd guess never will be, but just because it's not my cup of tea doesn't mean the stories aren't good, inherently, as stories. I'm not sure how parallel this is, but it's making me think of the "wow, this is pretty good for *insert genre here*!" type of feedback. There's a different between a statement along the lines of I'm surprised this worked *for me* and, what seems to happen more often, the statements like " ( ... )

...and this is why you should probably be in charge of fandom. At least, it would stop all the ship wars! Personally, I'm not reading that fic because it's RPF, which is a thing I dislike, but sometimes I wonder if all the ferocious little wars over preferences are really because no-one outside this tiny corner of the internet cares at all. Passionate attacks make people feel important.

Oooh. Is there a main site for all the big bang fics? I'm a little confused because I'm looking for the all-fandom one, not just spn and J2.
