While not unexpected I can`t say this spoiler is making me very happy either. I still have some hope that the Demonic Boss mentioned in "Bedtime Stories" wants to hold onto Dean`s soul for a better reason than to blackmail Sam. A Dean-related reason.
And there is at least something potentially interesting plotwise on the line for Dean hinted at in an upcoming episode. So they could make something of this passive deal-story yet. We`ll see.
Also with the big honking anvil in "Red Sky" how the older brother had to face the younger brother who he had killed (punsihed) for evil-doing as well as the whole save-him-or-kill-him story from last Season still pending, I`m actually pretty sure we`re heading into brother vs. brother in the Finale. Or whenever. :)

I think it's quite likely you're right -- and as long as Dean really DOES take a stand, I will be sooooo with it. If Sam is to come into his own, as hinted, then Dean should, as well. We know how deeply he loves Sam, how much he would do for him -- but it may well be time to show us what Dean will do for the rest of folks, as well. *nod*

Absolutely. And if Kripke is still doing bloody Star Wars we`ve either moved onto the prequels - Ruby giving Sam the dangling carrot of Dean`s life is pretty much 1:1 Palpatine-Anakin via Padme. Only Dean would then transcend Padme and encounter Samakin on a field of lava aka the Obi Wan role.
Or if he insists on Han/Luke we had basically the same story in the Dark Empire comics.
By the nature of storytelling Dean HAS to do something and be the counterweight if Sam goes dark. If he passively sat into a corner and let the world go to hell, what is this show`s message: "Co-depence (for both) rocks. Screw you, world"?
I haven't finished reading your post yet, but I'll go back to read it in a bit.
Just want to say, I thought I'd be outraged/disappointed/passionate about the spoiler, but really, I just stopped caring. I haven't stopped being disappointed by the show since AHBL. The show went in a direction that I'm not interested in - plenty of people still like it, and some even more now than ever. Good for them. I'm not one of them, and I think the show simply isn't the same one I fell in love with anymore. I don't think I'll keep watching come next season. So, whatever.
I would like to believe a set up like that would lead to a new storyline wherein Dean gets a stronger role as a result-- for example, Sam gets his superpowers, yay, and saves Dean, but sacrifices some essential aspect of himself at the same time-- perhaps an 'evil!Sammy' plotline would be set up, one where Dean has to then step up to the plate to get Sam to let goes of those powers and return to the Sam we know and love. Well, something like that might work for me, in terms of not making Dean plateau as a character. I think Kripke has always done a fairly good job in showing that actions, particularly supernatural ones, have consequences (see the fate of various people who meddle in the supernatural, ie. Faith, Holywood Babylon, etc.).... *think-y thoughts*
Maybe you're right. It's just that I've been falling out of love with the show since AHBL, and this is simply the last of the list that finally tipped the scale over to "shows I'm not interested in watching" side. I still very much love Dean, but I haven't enjoy watching most of the new season for various reasons and not looking forward to where I perceive it's going. I apologize for sounding so vague and almost dismissive, but this (breaking up with my show business) totally depressed me and I don't want to dwell on it anymore.
I just -- never liked how unequal it made the brothers, I never liked how no one ever answered the question of why Dean was passed over for the dubious honor, I don't know what the hell is going on with Mary, and. Yeah. So there it is.Oh wow, so much WORD to this whole post. I have always hated this: how insignificant this whole plotline makes Dean, how passive, powerless and roleless this makes him. And how much I hate it on so very many levels
( ... )
You know, I do realize that it's my burden to accept that EVEN FOR DEAN, everything is about Sam. Dean's one truly individually proactive gesture at the end of season two was to sacrifice himself for Sam. And maybe I have to accept that this is the way it is. That overall, in an arc sense, this show IS about Sam and his quirky brother Dean. Not about Sam and Dean Winchester, equals.
I mean, I'm sitting here with my coffee, trying to accept that. That Dean DOES exist for Sam. That Dean DOES have a special role, and that role is to be there for SamAnd I love that about Dean. I truly do. If you love Dean you HAVE to love his devotion to Sam -- it's a huge, pivotal part of who and what he is
( ... )
I am so glad I finally came across something that so accurately pointed out what I see as problematic in the show. The fact of Sam's powers has always bothered me precisely because it places the brothers on unequal footing. It renders Sam 'more significant'; both in terms of the plot and in terms of characterization and throws Dean into the role of sidekick. To use a BtVS reference, it essentially makes Dean be the guy who brings up the yellow crayon and saves the world. Except, without a constant reiteration in the text of the worth of that move (and even then), that's the stuff of hermeneutically commonplace, comical relief generating sidekicks.
If that's the story they want to tell, fine. But I signed up to watch 2 brothers on the road (figuratively more so than literally) and I'd just as soon watch something else if that's not what I'm getting.

That`s not gonna fly in a basic heroe`s tale.
