On Vox: Best of 2009 and New Year's Resolution for 2010

Jan 02, 2010 19:37

I liked looking back last year at 2008 so this year I'm also looking back at 2009. I didn't make my goal of reading 100 books, but at 79 books I was above last year's number (77). Anyway, here's my Best of 2009 list, broken down in the same way I broke down books last year: The Books that Blew Me Away - This is a very small list, just three books ( Read more... )

kristin cashore, dru pagliassotti, year in review, ilona andrews, ann aguirre, julie james, anna katherine, deanna raybourn, wen spencer

Since I posted about it hopefully that will help when I go to B&N and stare at the books I want!

Of the books on your lists I've only read Graceling and Strange Angels but enjoyed both.

I have the same second resolution - two books for every new book I buy. It didn't work last year (bought 32, read 45), but I'm going to try again!

Oh I recommend FIRE then. I liked it better than GRACELING, but it may be that I loved it more because that's the one I read first!

I think you did well last year. Read more than you bought. I need to do that. The willpower isn't great.. heh.

Fire is definitely on my to-read list. I read Graceling as an ARC as it was translated to Danish last year, so I hope to get Fire that way too :-)

Thanks! I hope to do better this year though. Especially as I just ordered 9 new books off amazon (received a gift certificate for Christmas - weee!)

We have a pretty similar taste I find ^^. I've just posted my ordered list of my own 2009 books as well (graded, too - but not as nicely formatted as yours, heh).

I wish you would review the P.C. Hodgell fantasy saga... there's a new one coming out in March, the first time she's got a major publisher - would you be willing if I gave you the ebooks as a present? Maybe Baen Webscriptions would let me do that.

Ummm.. I didn't realize temptation would happen so quickly after I said I should reduce the TBR. How many books are in this series?

Well, there are four novels so far (and one short story collection), but the 5th will come out in March. They're very, very good epic fantasy, but because the writer only managed to be published by smaller publishers and had writer's block for some years, they fell through the cracks of most fans and haven't gotten a lot of reviews. Since last year she got a contract with BAEN, her first major publisher... but I still haven't seen much pr from said publisher (and their covers have always been hideous - although the ebooks have beautiful covers, because she's also a stained glass artist and created them herself). I've been a fan since I found the first two collected in the UK in the 80s as Chronicles of the Kencyrath ( ... )

Looks like you had a very good read in reading. There are several on your best of 2009 that I want to read.

Good luck on your resolutions, I especially the willpower over buying books. I know I would fail. ;)
