Hey, watchers of Dr. Who and Torchwood:

What is up with Jack's "voice of a nightingale" thing in regards to Martha? Is that an allusion or an inside joke I've somehow never managed to catch despite watching both shows?

television, dr who

*icon snicker* I don't think so. At least I've never caught on to it.

It's never been explicitly explained since he first referred to her that way in "Reset", but I'm assuming it's a reference to her telling her story as she walked the Earth during the YTNW. Nightingales are reputed to have beautiful voices, and Martha is a beautiful woman (at least to some of us, and certainly to Jack) whose voice saved the Earth from the Master. Therefore he affectionately teases her by calling her "the voice of a nightingale" in Reset, The Stolen Earth and Lost Souls.

It's never really explained - persiflage_1 has one theory, or it could be a Florence Nightingale reference. Basically, someone wrote the line into Reset, and other writers decided to keep the reference going.

At this point it's a create your own Fanon point.
