So I’ve reached the freak-out portion of doing a big bang early. Like … I’ve written 1k of my alleged Merlin big bang and it’s pants. And that’s not me going PLEASE TELL ME HOW AWESOME I AM fishing, it’s actually pants.
What I usually do when I hate the beginnings of something, but still like the general idea that I started with, is to keep writing, with the intention of scrapping that beginning later. It usually takes a while for your brain to settle into longfic; I don't think I've ever had a fic where I got what I wanted from the get-go.
Another tactic could be opening a separate document so you can't see what you've written (but you're still writing the same story!) and just keep going. Don't reread what you've written - write from what you remember of it. Sometimes the general gist is right but you just haven't found the right way to bring it across yet, so it's like cheating by pretending that you're done with that bit and moving on. Same with the previous idea - eventually you'll hit your stride and you can go back and rewrite the beginning properly.
I want to write some kind of Merlin/Gwaine I think even though nothing I ever write will touch the gloriousness that is The Five Kingdoms but idk what to do and I'm so tired this week that all I'm writing are tweets and replies to LJ entries /o\
