the cost of having a baby

As much as I tried to have a natural birth, it just wasn't in the cards. Because of a series of complications, I ended up needing an epidural, a petocin drip, and ultimately a c-section followed by a 3 day stay in the hospital. I just received the list of expenses from the hospital (keep in mind that my insurance covers it all.) Ready for it? ( Read more... )

Most of the expense of private in-country adoption is medical expenses of the mother.

Just trying to interpret. Do you think that the cost was excessive? If so, where was the excess?

No, I don't necessarily think the cost was excessive. I don't know enough about it to know if any costs were inflated. My point is that the average person cannot afford to pay that much money to simply have a baby, and so affordable health care coverage is necessary. The idea that we should just have a health care free market in this country when common things such as childbirth can cost more than the average annual income (before taxes) is just insane and inhumane to me.

The problem is all those golly gosh darnit gubmint regulations. Let doctors and nurses who went to University of Phoenix Online deliver babies, and watch the cost go down. Not to mention all this costly sterilization and gloves and all that: that which doesn't kill the momma will only make her stronger.
