I just went over to look at that fan fiction survey that's whipping up a frothy kerfuffle. Didn't look at the survey itself, which I don't intend to take, just browsed the comments. ETA The survey's down now while they lick their wounds, I guess

Honestly, though, the condecension levels went through the roof as they tried to pat us on our sweet little heads. Gah.

What is really annoying me right now, is a comm like crack_van blithely endorsing it. Not just advertising it, but endorsing the damn thing, in a 'we know these people and we trust them so go ahead and do it' way.

That level of ignorance might have been understandable (might, I said might) back in the 80s, but anyone with Google and an open mind...

Mind you, these days I jib at explaining myself even to people I know... so I'm probably not the right person to talk about open minds :)

Who goes into something like that without some research first? They're on LJ; didn't they look around? How can they be so ill-informed and expect to be able to produce somethign worthwhile?

Clearly they've never read a drabble kerfuffle or they'd know just how seriously we take wordcounts.

The thing is, wordcount is standard in pretty much every header, and they say they've been hanging out at fanfic.net; oodles of epics there; how can they think longer fics aren't common?

They're stupid.

I'm not going near them in case it's catching.

I think it's more because they don't think that we're interested in the art of writing itself, or structure, or paying heed to details, we're busy just trying to churn out huge quantities of gratuitous prawn.

If it's true for one person it must be true for all!! (At the very least it makes 'research' a hell of a lot easier.)

They seemed surprised that some of us are pro writers as well as fic writers and don't take too kindly to being told that one is better than the other.

I'm as proud of my fanfic as I am my published prawn.
