Years ago, I remember being 10 or 11 and picking up a nonfiction paperback about nuclear war. I'm not sure at that time if I had a firm grasp of concepts like ICBMs, megaton yields, and nuclear winter, but I do remember wishing our house was closer to the major US Air Force base 15 miles away. The book's chapter on the effects of a nuclear strike on people and property was enough to make me think that in the event of nuclear war Ground Zero was the most attractive place to be.
I've often thought it's odd that collectively we don't seem to fret much anymore about thermonuclear war, but it's conceivable that with rogue states and terrorists a nuclear strike is more probable today than in the days of superpowers and the strategies of Mutually Assured Destruction.
