Ray Bradbury's Vision of the Future

I was looking to see if the text of Ray Bradbury's "There Will Come Soft Rains" was online, and it is, in a number of places. If you've not read it, it's absolutely stunning: http://us.history.wisc.edu/hist102/pdocs/bradbury_martian.pdfRead more... )

I suspect only a Russian could have infused that with the proper darkness and despair.

Years ago, I remember being 10 or 11 and picking up a nonfiction paperback about nuclear war. I'm not sure at that time if I had a firm grasp of concepts like ICBMs, megaton yields, and nuclear winter, but I do remember wishing our house was closer to the major US Air Force base 15 miles away. The book's chapter on the effects of a nuclear strike on people and property was enough to make me think that in the event of nuclear war Ground Zero was the most attractive place to be.

I've often thought it's odd that collectively we don't seem to fret much anymore about thermonuclear war, but it's conceivable that with rogue states and terrorists a nuclear strike is more probable today than in the days of superpowers and the strategies of Mutually Assured Destruction.

interesting, and oddly utopian....the reality will probably involve us eating our shoes and wallpaper (and each other, if it goes that far) while we silently hope that someone, somewhere has the wit to press the button and bring a swift and merciful end to it all...

PS: Happy Christmas!
