This commentary is seriously one of the best things I've seen in a long, long time. The fact that Keith was so emotionally involved in what he was saying only makes it better, stronger, more powerful. He cares and it shows, and it really makes me wonder if there perhaps shouldn't be a better checks and balances system in place, to prevent this kind of King-like behavior in future. Because if a narcissist like George can do it, anyone can, and that's what scares the shit out of me. We're making our way through 8 years of this crap - do we really want more of it when he's tossed out of office on his big lily white ass?

Personally, I'd love to have both him and Cheney impeached. San Franciscan Feminist White House all the way! But what are the odds? And I'm asking seriously: I'm not as familiar with the American system as I could be.

We have checks and balances in place. Unfortunately, the rightwing co-opted them and the moderate Republicans and the Democrats are all too afraid of offending, stepping on toes, not getting re-elected that they have allowed it. I'm not sure there's ever been this much corruption at the top.

OK, well, then, doesn't that make you wonder if they're good enough? Strong enough? Because it seems to me (and again, not as familiar with the American system as I could be, so I'm really asking to learn, not to challenge) that the point of checks and balances is to reduce or completely erase corruption in government. If they're being viewed as "suggestions" (much like traffic signals in Israel), then... what's the point in having them?

Oh, yes, many of us have been asking ourselves that question for quite some time now. Unfortunately, I don't have an answer. I don't know why my party, hell, my country, is so spineless, so blind, so willing to let this "small corner of the Republican party" as Keith called them, essentially co-opt our system of democracy. It's as if the majority of us are in some fugue state. It's incomprehensible and unexplainable to me. And then *they* would say it's because they've got God on their side; that's why they succeed.

IMO, as soon as it was determined that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq; that Bush, Cheney, Colin Powell (whose silence on this disappoints me far more than I can say; much moreso than anything Bush, et. al. did, because I thought he was a man of principle) that they lied to get us into this war because George Bush had a personal hard-on for taking down Saddam Hussein, impeachment proceedings should have begun *that instant*.

Well, I may not always feel obligated to stand for a flag but damned if I didn't stand up during this.

It is still incomprehensible to me that the impeachment of Clinton was allowed to go forward *over a blowjob* and yet there is no political will to stop this administration.

Imagine if Bill had pardoned Susan McDougal. And she, at least, did the time! The Reps would still be hammering on about it.

I know. If the Democrats can't capitalize on this, we need a new party.

Personally, I think impeachment would go a long way to honoring the birth of our independence, by freeing ourselves from King George, all over again.

WORD.

That was the most incredible commentary I have ever heard-I still have goosebumps. Guy deserves a Pulitzer.

Thanks for posting.

Keith deserves a standing ovation for saying so much so beautifully. Impeachment is long overdue for the putative king George. Wish there were more Dems like Waxman and Emanuel out there who would push for it.

Peace and safety on this most important day

You too! I know, I wish these politicians would get their heads out of their asses and realize the time to stand up for principle and not merely their own election/asses is NOW.

BTW, I love all of your insightful and informative posts, and read them with great interest, even though I don't always comment.

Thank you for your kind words. For the longest time I and others have felt so outraged that no one seemed to be paying attention to what Bush & his cronies have done to our country. Now that people, meaning the press, is paying attention, it's still frustrating to see all the wasted opportunities to bring this man & his VP, since he certainly isn't anyone else's, down off their perch built on "executive privilege."

great post, Jane

Olbermann is a great voice in the cesspool that is political commentary in the US these dark days. Sometimes I go to youtube and listen to clips of his more scathing diatribes against Bush and his administration, and it cheers me up to see someone on our side finally having the guts to say what the Dems should be saying. And he's getting great ratings, too. Our intelligent, honest, informed answer to the Bill O'Reillys of FAUX news.

Happy Fourth!
