"Date a Girl who Reads"

One of my friends posted this super cute essay on Facebook this morning.  It's a response to "You Should Date an Illiterate Girl," but, I think, infinitely better.  An excerpt:

"Find a girl who reads. You’ll know that she does because she will always have an unread book in her bag. She’s the one lovingly looking over the shelves in the bookstore, the ( Read more... )

My goodness, the fellow who wrote about dating a girl who doesn't read certainly has issues of inadequacy. I love how he blames the girl who reads and 'sees' all the ways he would fail her. I think he does an excellent job of 'seeing' all his failures himself. He seems a sad little man. Interesting essays...

Yes, the original essay really does bug me. I can't decide if the author is being literal, or if he's trying to allude to some 'larger truth' about not living a mediocre life, or something along those lines. In any case, the tone of it really rubs me the wrong way. I suppose to me it comes off as sounding pretty pretentious, and also kind of offensive. :/

Should I read You Should Date An Illiterate Girl? Because, while the descriptions are beautiful in their own way, from the first paragraph, I'm not sure just how sexist it really is.

I really liked the coffee part.

Ehhhh, I don't know if it's 100% worth reading. I am torn between feeling highly offended at it, and wondering if he's trying to make some sort of backwards, "ironic" statement where 'dating an illiterate girl' is a metaphor for living a mediocre life. If it's the latter then I suppose I sorta agree, but the whole thing smacks of a pretentious, sanctimonious, irritating douchebag who thinks he's being really 'witty' and 'intelligent' and 'disaffected,' and it really turns me off.

Hah. I reacted way more strongly to the essay than I actually realized.

I read some of it, but his writing leaves me cold. Even if this is the way things really go, that doesn't mean he has to cheapen the romance that way.

:) Well, it was a good response to his writing. My comment about the coffee seemed kind of bland in comparison to your reaction.

I'm scared to even click on the link to the initial essay! Why would anyone suggest it's better to date an illiterate girl than date someone, who reads and occupies themselves with activities adding to their knowledge?! I might do it at later on, if I pluck up my courage.

As for your mate's contribution, it's very sweet, indeed! Kudos to her and thank *you* for sharing.

I've read 'Date A Girl who Reads' several times, but I could never get to finishing 'Date an Illiterate Girl'.
