Grad student parties are a riot.

In the best way possible, of course.

There's nothing like throwing a group of overworked and underpaid grad students into a room, providing them with beers and good music, and letting them go to it.  The result is inevitably a mixture of bitching about research and students, commiserating over the latest developments in relationships and dating, and ( Read more... )

Forgive me if I've asked before, but what are you studying, and are you working on an MA or PhD?

My husband's getting his MFA in Creative Writing and I went to a party hosted by one of his classmates on Saturday night and it had a similar vibe, except since they're art students you also end up with people comparing their tattoos (which are generally references to their favorite influences) and being down on their own work.

I always enjoy scoping out people's bookshelves. You can learn a lot about a person that way, plus it makes for good conversation when for once other people at the party have read them and you can have an actual conversation about it other than "I hear that's good," "Oh yeah, you should read it!"

I miss academia XD

Comparing tattoos? I love it! We have a handful of inked folks around the department, but not enough for party chatter about tattoos.

I'm in PhD program in sociology, though we receive a MA along the way... which means that I am slaving away on the thesis and dreaming of the day when I can finish up and move on to the diss.

Jealous! I'm hoping to do the same for English someday, but it's uh, competitive, to say the least.

Yes, it was such a chill night. Definitely much-needed and enjoyed.

You write beautifully! I'm sure I'm not breaking any news here, and chances are I'm the "newest friend" you've acquired (sounds horrible, doesn't it?), but I thought I'd go ahead and congratulate you on it anyway.

I'm hoping to start a Postgraduate degree in September and I'm buzzing with excitement. About everything and anything surrounding it! You're ahead of me by a mile..I might get there one day myself, but we shall wait and see.

P.S I'm yet to explore your Journal. Unlike me, who have only just revived this online diary, you've quite a lot on here.
