Five o'clock in the morning. The crisp, winter wind licked at Jamie's face as she jogged against it down the cobblestone paths of Painswick University. It was still dark, and nearly every student was tucked away in their bed; perfect jogging time. No one could bother her while she trained ( Read more... )

When Travis couldn't sleep he liked to walk around the empty campus. The cool night, or in this case early morning, air helped clear his head. He had been up all night doing everything he could think of - he even studied at one point. Though, nothing helped.

He usually never ran into anybody but today Travis wasn't alone. He walked towards the figure hoping he wasn't running into a drunken slacker in need of help. That would be just his luck.

"Hello?" he responded. Hardly an answer to the question.

"I spend weekends at my dad's. He lives on a lake and now has a bunch of boats he probably doesn't need." Now he was feeling really stupid.

"I get restless when I haven't done anything in a while. I was drawing up some plans for my step-sister's birthday present."

"So," She narrowed her eyes in thought, then moved her hands to sit on her hips, "You build your father countless boats he doesn't need or use."

Jamie was a critical person. It was simply drawn into her very essence from the years of dissecting Quidditch plays and studying her opponents to search for weaknesses. A little voice in the back of her head had to constantly remind her to ease up.

She sighed, a bit of tension falling from her shoulders, "A present, huh? What kind of present?"

"She wants to participate in a race car derby or something," he went on explaining. "But my our parents don't want her building it. So I'm going to do it with her when we get back."

Travis loved his step-sister Rebecca, as much as she was a pain in his butt. She was only seven years old, completely muggle, and all she wanted to do was be better than her annoying older sister Rachael, who she completely adored. In Travis' opinion, she was more tolerable than either Amanda and Rachael and she was worth building something for.

"Oh, and I'm going to charm it so that she won't get hurt if she completely wrecks it."

Jamie hitched an eyebrow, defensively shifting her weight onto her back foot.

"Isn't that cheating?"

"Nah, I just don't want her breaking anything," he said casually. "If the cart crashes, it'll be destroyed."

"And the other kids?" Jamie said, crossing her arms over her chest as she took a step closer.

"Don't you think their parents would be destroyed if they crashed?" Jamie shrugged up her shoulders, "But I guess charming all their carts would take too long."

"It wouldn't be conspicuous," he signed. Though, Travis had thought about it. Every time he took Rebecca to school and saw kids falling on the playground.

"If I could, I would."

"You can," Jamie gave a little nod, "Sneak in at night before the race, put a few quick protective charms on the carts."

Jamie gave another little shrug, then reached into her pocket. She pulled out a water bottle and took a long drink.

"It would be easy."

"You know, you're right," Travis said, breaking into a wide smile. He was beginning like Jamie; she had some ace ideas.

"It wouldn't take very long at all."

"Yeah, well.." Jamie cleared her throat, then looked over her shoulder. Still the early, dark hours of the morning. Still cold. Still alone. How long had they been out there, idly chatting with each other? How uncharacteristic.

"It's kind of cold out," Jamie sighed, breath little puffs of white in front of her lips, "I should probably get inside."

"Oh...yeah..." Travis scratched his head again and laughed. It had been longer than he realized and now he was starting to feel drowsy.

"Sorry I interrupted your run."
