I've been re-reading George RR Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series lately. It's great.

It's a long series (currently, it's planned to run to seven volumes, and volume 3 is so big it was published in two volumes in the UK), and the plot gets very convoluted, full of intrigue, betrayal, spies, giant wolves, dead men walking in the dead of night,
