Poor old John Oxford died during the day from exhaustion. He had had no sickness after the operation and seemed easier from pain. Went round the Hospital. Read Fred Robinson's new novel Women are Strange from 4 till 7 am and got very much interested by it so that sleep deserted my cases.

Oh, poor Mr Oxford. Still, dying within a day of your spouse is the way some people would want to go, I suppose.

I know, I had the same reaction!

(And then I wondered if I were odd, feeling so immediate about someone who's been dead for over a hundred years.)

No, I agree - it is a really sad chain of events. You can't help but wonder whether he would have pulled through if his wife hadn't had a seizure and died herself. :-(
