Cagney on the green

Alice asked about the "How I Play Golf" short film, and I was going to post this anyway. If you haven't seen it, you aren't missing any major gem, but there are a couple of cute moments amid the nerve-deadening golf advice. *g*

Oh! That short is actually one of the features on the DVD of 'G' Men that's in the Tough Guys box set. So it's definitely out there in a much friendlier form for Jimmy fans than the How I Play Golf series.

That's cool that we can add tags ourselves. I didn't realise that!

That's good to know. It is cute to see, but $150 is definitely not happening. :Þ

Oh yes, tags are good--I know I've often wanted to look up an older entry here and had to dig for it. I do reserve the mod's prerogative to edit tags slightly if I think it's warranted, but only to try to keep them as concise and organized as possible--correcting duplications and misspellings, etc. :)

Thank you for the info on the short film, Jordanna - it sounds well worth seeing! We don't get the Golf Channel over here (as far as I know, anyway), though that has never bothered me before now.;)

I don't have the DVD of G-Men as the movie is always being shown on TCM, plus it is yet another one only available on import. (Warner's kindly issued a cheaper UK version of the 'Tough Guys' set... cheaper because the three Cagney movies weren't included!)

Ouch. :Þ I guess they think he doesn't have as much appeal over there... and I must admit that I've seen some evidence to support that. Judging by his fanlisting membership and my general observation, Cagney fandom in the modern day does seem to be largely centered here in America. Perhaps it's because so many of his movies (and by extension his popular image--i.e. the gangster) are inherently bound to such a uniquely American part of history.

Still, from what I've seen, England does rank [a very distant] second. I'm sorry to hear they're not trying harder to foster that. (And I'm glad you're one of those who managed to discover him anyway! *g*)

Thank you!, I'm glad to have discovered him too, and also to have discovered this community!:) I'm sure you're right that he has a lot more appeal in the US, though I think there are quite a few fans over here too - the guy at my local second-hand video shop admitted to paying £50 for a rare video of 'Strawberry Blonde', for himself rather than for the shop.

The same guy also told me that fewer old movies are released on DVD in the UK in general because the companies need at least 10,000 sales for a title to make money, and they are less likely to get that here because of our smaller population. Luckily I've got a multi-region player!
