No , Spike. It's gonna hurt a lot.
I can’t believe it but I never listed my favourite spuffy scenes..or I don't remember having done it. Once upon a time there was a meme circulating.. As shippers we all have so many wonderful scenes that we don’t want to forget and now that the series has ended, we also have a different appreciation -I want to play .:)
My ten most favourite Spike/Buffy scenes(among many ) - or should I say "a warning and nine loving steps".
There are a few pics and it may be not dial-up friendly.
It began with a warning that tasted like something else ,it started with a promise of pain and how we got it..
-School hard.
Their first real confrontation in Sunnydale school and Spike being all arrogant with his : “ I just got so bored. I'll tell you what. As a personal favor from me to you I'll make it quick. It won't hurt a bit.”
And sounding confident, Buffy quietly answering : “No, Spike. It's gonna hurt a lot.”
And then they fight. I admit that it’s easier now to see the whole scene as foreshadowing so perfectly what’s to come - you can’t help feeling thrilled and filled with so much sorrow at the same time.
-Fool for love.
I don’t know how that scene couldn't belong to the list.;-)
At the end of the episode ,a very angry Spike gives up on wanting to kill Buffy :in a heartbeat and a head tilt -and sits down close to comfort her.
And she accepts.
She has tears rolling down her cheeks , she has just spent time with him wanting to know secrets to be stronger , trying to understand how to be a better slayer and she isn’t afraid of showing herself so defeated and sad.
Warrior to warrior they always guessed each other right .
In a moment of weakness he’s at her side and she lets him.
No words needed.
-Listening to fear.
When the Queller attacks Buffy , Spike helps retrieving the knife , throws it to her and she goes for the kill . There is just a silent understanding that is so strong between them ..Buffy takes the hand he’s offering and he pulls her to her feet. The arrival of Riley who looks at Spike and Buffy holding hands is worth jumping up and down.:D
This is what they can be : fighting but side by side. No words needed.
-Intervention.
“What you did, for me & Dawn... that was real. I won't forget it.”
I love that scene so much because Buffy acknowledges how deep is Spike’s devotion to her and her sister.And the kiss she gives him speaks of trust , of the humanity she realizes Spike always kept within himself and she is grateful for it.
Spike’s wounded face shows such an amazing amount of feelings it’s heartbreaking and beautiful.
-The gift.
Buffy lying dead and Spike heartbroken.
The realization of what he lost . His heartwrenching sorrow is such a poignant manifestation of love.
-Afterlife.
Another life-altering realization for Spike who watches Buffy back from the dead slowly coming down the stairs.
Thanks again to James stunning acting talent , the atmosphere is vibrating with emotion between the two of them, and his overwhelming joy is just there.
There is a pattern: so often Spike and Buffy understand each other without speaking. Other people mentioned it and it always resonated deeply for me.
-Never leave me.
When Spike is chained in the basement after he attacked Andrew .I think I waited a long time for Buffy's declaration. « You faced the monster inside of you and you fought back. You risked everything to be a better man.( ..)
And you can be. You are. You may not see it, but I do. I do. I believe in you, Spike. »
There is so much expectation on his face.
Buffy never says such things lightly so her words are really another loving and trusting step in their relation. They’ve come a long way to be there but they are now and Spike knows he can believe her when she makes such pledge.
And it did wonderful things to my spuffy heart.
-Dead things.
The ( searing hot ) crypt door scene. Another silent , meaningful connection :their hands against different sides of the door and the desire ,the overwhelming longing . Even at their darkest places there is something worth fighting for.
-Touched.
Wrapped in each other arms , taking strength from each other. It is deeply heart-warming seeing that we go from Spike tenderly holding Buffy
to Buffy gently holding Spike . Trust, intimacy and a shift in their positions that spoke volume to me.
-Chosen.
In the basement .
“Angel said the amulet was meant to be worn by a champion.”
When Spike looking defeated drops his hand ..and Buffy gives him the amulet . She doesn’t have to explain. In her eyes there ‘s love for the friend, the lover, the man he’s become.
And how I liked that they don’t talk about it and that she simply says that Faith has still her room.And Spike plays along, teasing her.” Well, you're not staying here! You can't buy me off with shiny beads and sweet talk. You've got Angel-breath. I'm not going to just let you whack me back and forth like a rubber ball. I got my pride, you know.”
I love that their last moment together alone ( at least what we got on screen ) is that touch of tenderness :Buffy's hand on his cheek and Spike ‘s words : “I don’t know what I would have done if you’de gone upstairs.”
While he knows that with dawnlight the most terrible fight will take place and that he will have to prove that he’s worth all the trust she put in him, while he can guess how it will end for him , what matters is that Buffy just claimed him as her champion and that she is going to spend her last night in his arms.
And the rest is history, and dreams.
