I don't believe this is where Jaime was really going to end up, at least in the books. Maybe he would have died, but I just don't believe GRRM would have had him return to Cersei's arms, after such a short time with Brienne.
Yes, I expect that the books will be different, too. No Cleganebowl to name an obvious thing (as The Mountain's has been killed by poison from Oberyn's spear.)
I guess you are right, that things were rushed and that in the books they may stay together longer - even if he might return to Cersei in the end. Obviously, I hope for a different ending
Brienne is the heir of Tarth, why would she end up in the Kings guard. Especially to guard a man who can look into the future and knows when a killer is coming? I expect that it was done for the dramatic effect that she could finish Jaime's page in the book, as that was what Jaime would have wanted.
So, I hope for a different ending here too, with a more fulfilling arc for the both of them.
Weirdly, I don't mind the ending itself. If Brienne was meant to become part of the KG and complete Jaime's pages, that's okay with me. I just hate that we got such a short time with the unambiguous after so much UST and hearteyes. There could have been... more. And if not, they could have NOT ended it with Cersei's "we will die together as we were born together" prophecy. The time they spent reversing Jaime's character development could have been spent showing more moments with Brienne. Maybe it's asking too much, and I know the series isn't the J/B show. Still, I've been into this series for the last thirteen years, sailing this ship for twelve (and I know plenty of folks here have done so for even longer!). I really think they could have afforded a few seconds here and there. I can handle a bittersweet ending, but season 8 has been half-baked, bland and bitter, with no room for sweet
