Ashlee rolled over and pulled the pillow onto her head. The throbbing in her neck when she swallowed made her want to die. She knew what this meant. Every time she got a sore throat, she got the flu. Every single freaking, flacking time. One eye opened and she checked the time. It was six thirty in the morning on Saturday. She was sick on a Saturday. Ashlee slammed the pillow back on her head and tried to force herself back to sleep.
Her body was worn down from all the work Beth has piled on her. It seemed the barracuda was becoming aware of how close Coop was getting to her much younger assistant and her solution was to run Ashlee into the ground. Her boss wanted to crush her and with each passing day Ashlee started feeling more and more stressed. It didn’t help that Coop was still a star in almost all of her dreams. That kiss they shared only fueled more. Now she knew exactly how good he felt and how soft his lips were.
She knew and it made working with him that much harder. It made working with Beth nearly impossible. Ashlee sighed then groaned. Even sighing hurt. She was going to be in for a long weekend. She wrapped her blanket around her shoulders and shuffled across the house to her tiny kitchen. Ashlee put her tea pot on the stove after shaking it to make sure it had water in it then she turned on the eye. Turning her head, she sneezed and her head swam. She gripped the edge of the counter to stop the world from spinning off its axis.
Once the tilt-a-whirl she was on stopped, Ashlee walked carefully over to her kitchen table and dropped her head to the cold wood. Her eyes felt heavy, her limbs felt like they were being weighed down with elephants. She started to slip into unconsciousness when a ringing off to the side of the room jerked her back from the brink. Her eyes searched the living room for the source. The cotton in her head making it difficult to think clearly, finally sound and source linked in her mind and she glared at her phone. Who in the hell would be calling her at seven on a Saturday morning?
Usually curiosity was her weakness, she was a person that liked to know what was happening, especially if it affected her, but she couldn’t summon even the slightest energy to even care. She waited patiently for the ringing to die or for the phone to combust, whatever came first. After the ninth ring, it quit and she went back to worshiping the cold wood table until her water finished boiling. The teapot started whistling on the stove and she pushed herself up to get it. That took way more effort than it should have and she nearly fell once during the four feet walk to the pot.
This was when she realized just how bad her flu would be this time around. Part of her wanted to call her mother to come baby her like she used to as a child. That was always her first thought when she was sick. Ashlee knew just how much of a baby she could be. Getting down a packet of Theraflu, she filled a mug with hot water and mixed in the medicine. Taking her drink, Ashlee walked slowly, cautiously over to the couch and sat down. Her aching muscles sighed in relief. Standing up, walking and thinking was causing them to revolt.
For the next thirty minutes, she sipped the hot-warm-and then finally cold medicine. At some point she placed her mug on the coffee table then fell asleep. She really couldn’t remember doing it, but she remembered the rude awakening she got after. A thousand curse words ran through her head as she made her way over to the door to yell at the person on the other side… or make rude gestures at the other person seeing as how her throat felt like someone used a blowtorch on it. Ashlee stood on tip toes and looked through the peephole.
Her annoyance intensified at who was standing there looking as innocent as a newborn baby. She pulled the door open and glared at Coop. His smile dropped, his eyes grew concerned and she wanted to hit him… then kiss him senseless for the sympathy. “I called you this morning,” he started walking into her home without an invitation.
Ashlee gaped openly. She thought vampires couldn’t walk in without being invited… She closed the door then leaned against it as the earth shifted violently. The medicine started crawling up her stomach and she ran as quickly as she could over to her bathroom. Somehow by the grace of God, she made it before all of her past meals revisited her. Ashlee closed her eyes and heaved, praying that this would be a onetime thing. Vomiting was her least favorite thing about being sick.
When she felt like it was safe, for the moment anyway, she flushed the toilet and crawled over to the sink. A long leg blocked her; she looked up into Coop’s eyes. He held a washcloth out to her and it was a measure of how bad she felt that she didn’t even care that he just saw her throw up her entire stomach’s contents. Ashlee took the washcloth and then the cup of water he handed her. “Thank you,” she mumbled as loud as she could.
He nodded. Ashlee sipped some of the water to rinse the nasty taste out of her mouth then spit it out in the toilet. She placed the washcloth on her head and lay down on the tile floor. Coop sat by the door, stretching his long legs out in front of him. She watched him warily, confused by his actions. “I called you earlier this morning,” he explained. She could barely comprehend the words, but figured there wouldn’t be a test so she didn’t say anything. “Beth wants us; well really she only wants me or you because she doesn’t trust us together, to work on the Chambery account so that she can present it Monday instead of in two weeks.”
The fog cleared enough for Ashlee to add another reason to hate Beth to her list. That list was growing daily. “You,” she took a deep breath. Talking was an effort, just like everything else. “Want me to work when I can barely stand?”
“No,” he shook his head. “I don’t. But Beth won’t care. She wants it done. I can do it on my own if you want me to but…” He picked at the material of his pants. Ashlee took notice of the fact that he was in jeans and not his normal suit. Had she been in her right mind, she would have appreciated the change. “I haven’t been able to work with you much since Beth went all crazy and I miss having you so close.”
At this point she was pretty sure the hallucinations had started because that was not a Coop thing to say. “Are you drunk?” Ashlee asked from her spot on the floor. “Or am I having one of my dreams again…” she placed her hand on her forehead and realized a fever had started. “Oh it’s a fever induced mirage,” she concluded satisfied with that.
“What are your dreams like?” He asked moving closer to her. The teasing in his voice was pure Coop and she smiled. “What do we do in your dreams Ashlee?”
Her smile turned loopy, “What don’t we do is the better question, Mr. Bradshaw.” Ashlee tucked her arms under her head and closed her eyes. The sickness was wearing her out, making her entire body ache. “You can be so naughty when you want to be. So naughty, Beth would kill us both if she ever found out what we did in my dreams. Detachable shower heads are really nice, you should try it.” Her words trailed off as sleep claimed her.

Ashlee stretched her body out and groaned at the stiffness of her joints. She rolled her head into her pillow, snuggling deeper into the sheets of her bed. Her eyes snapped open and she popped up. The room spun after she did. She pressed a hand to her head, lying back against the mattress, slowly. A million different thoughts swarmed her full head. The congestion slowing down her thought progress greatly. One thought that did make it through the mist was: ‘How in the hell did I get from my bathroom floor to my bed?’
Her answer walked through her bedroom door a second later carrying a tray of medicine, juice and soup. Coop smiled at her, placing the tray on the end of the bed. “Are you feeling any better?”
She opened her mouth and then shut it. Brushing a hand along her blond hair, Ashlee turned away from him. “Uh,” she looked down at the tray that was still in his hands. “How…did I get in my bed?” Her cheeks turned red when she noticed her clothes had changed. “And how did my night clothes change?”
“You don’t remember?” He sat on the other side of the bed next to her.
Ashlee closed her eyes, pieces of the day and night before floating into her conscious mind. Her red cheeks turned even hotter. “Did I throw up on you at one point?” Her hand shot to her mouth. “Oh god did I tell you to use my detachable shower head?”
Coop laughed. It was deep and rich and sent nervous shivers through her body. “Yes,” he said with that cocky tone in his voice, stretching out on her bed, “To both of your questions. I have to admit to image of you naked, wet and in the throes of passion did cause my heart to stop a couple of times throughout the night. Especially when you took a shower last night after the last time you got sick.”
She leaned forward, dropping her head onto the mattress in between her folded legs. Embarrassment spread like wild fire through her body. “Oh god,” she mumbled into the mattress. She rolled her head to the side, looking into his amused eyes. “Shouldn’t you be gone? I mean you don’t want to catch what I have.”
“Had,” he corrected. She popped up in confusion. “I called a doctor friend of mine, Rick Bauer. He told me that what you had was a nasty twelve hour bug. It leaves the system after that much time. And I don’t need to worry about getting sick,” he grinned and she wanted to hit him. “I got my flu shot, plus I take a strict number of vitamins.”
“Well aren’t you special,” Ashlee mumbled, leaning toward the tray of food. She pulled it over her lap and looked at the homemade chicken noodle soup in wonderment. “Did you make this yourself?”
Coop nodded, “My dad owns Company and taught all his children to cook at an early age. With Beth I don’t do it much. It was nice getting back into the kitchen. By the way, you need to go shopping. I had to get creative with what you had.”
“I don’t cook,” she said sipping the hot soup. The broth slid down her sore throat like a soothing balm. Turning to Coop, she shrugged. “My mom wasn’t a cooking type. She was more of a takeout kind a girl. This is really good. I’m surprise something like this could come from my kitchen.” Ashlee licked her lips to get some of the soup from the flesh. “Thank you for staying with me, but you probably need to leave. I’m sure Beth has noticed that you didn’t come home last night.”
“I don’t live with Beth,” he eyed her. “What type of relationship do you think we have?”
“You’re with her aren’t you,” she swirled the spoon around and around in her hand. “I mean you two are…like sleeping together right?”
Coop’s eyes turned even more amused. “You blush a lot, Ash.” She blushed further at the nickname. “Beth and I are together, but she doesn’t own me. Not really. We just have a very complicated relationship.” Ashlee pushed the delicious meal away, suddenly not very hungry. “I have my own place and for the past couple of months since my pop got out of the hospital, I’ve been with him. I don’t always fuck Beth.”
“Well,” she twisted a napkin in her hands. “That’s a crude way of putting it.”
He shrugged unapologetically, “I don’t love her. She doesn’t love me. She loves what we do together. I wouldn’t call that anything more than fucking would you?”
Ashlee felt antsy. “I wouldn’t know,” she mumbled. Getting up from the bed, she paced the space between her bathroom door and the edge of her mattress. “I don’t just…” she swallowed.
“Fuck,” he supplied amused by her once again.
She frowned at him. “No I don’t just fuck.” She rubbed a hand over her hair. “I don’t think I could ever be in a relationship like that.”
“You’d be surprised how easy it is,” he stood and walked in her direction. “It’s about letting go and being free with yourself.”
“Well,” she backed up against the wall. “I’m not on sex and the city. I don’t want to be that free. I want to know that sex means something.” She panicked when her back hit the wall and he continued to advance. “If that’s what you think is going to happen between us,” she swallowed. “You might as well leave now.”
Coop touched her cheek, sliding down to her neck when he got close to her. Her pulse jumped. “I don’t think that at all, Ash.” The words slipped past her last defense, like mist through a keyhole. “But you can’t deny that something is happening between us. Something primal,” his long fingers curled in her hair. She tilted her head toward them, “Something that won’t be ignored for long.”
His mouth inched closer to hers. Her eyelids grew heavy and her head angled toward his. At the last second she ducked under his arms and ran for the bathroom. Her heart pounded in her head. She turned to look at her reflection and nearly groaned. He wanted to kiss her looking like death? What was wrong with him? She walked on unsteady legs over to the sink and pulled her toothbrush out. He would be gone by the time she got back out, she was sure of it.
Ashlee went through her routine slowly. She began brushing her teeth paying special attention to every tooth; she took a shower with extra hot water to get the past couple of hours from her skin and then wrapped a big fluffy towel around her body. She opened the bathroom door and nearly dropped the towel. Coop was still there sitting on her bed, waiting for her to emerge.
His eyes were dark and dangerous on hers. Ashlee started to back up into the bathroom again, but she wasn’t quick enough. And maybe she didn’t want to be fast enough to stop him. Coop took her quickly into his arms and crushed his lips to hers. Her knees went weak. She was sure she would be on the floor had he not being holding her so tightly. She entangled her hands in his hair, the towel dropping between them. Coop backed them up until she was against the counter top then lifted her up, coming to stand between her open legs. His fingers slid along her legs toward her throbbing center, tracking flames on her body as he did. Her mind was screaming at her to stop this before she crossed a line she couldn’t uncross.
Ashlee pulled her mouth from his and panted, “We have to stop.”
He took her face in his hands and looked deeply into her eyes. “Do you really want to stop?”
She paused a half a second then sealed her fate. She shook her head no, “No I don’t want to stop. God help me, I don’t want to stop.”
Together they lifted his shirt over his head and brought their naked chests together for the first time. Her stomach turned pleasantly at the feeling of him so close to her. Liquid desire swirled through her body and settled between her legs. Her nipples tightened painfully. He cupped her breast in his hands, rolling her tiny buds between his long fingers. Ashlee moaned, her head hitting the mirror behind her. Wrecking pants came from her throat as she tried to slow down the lust inside of her.
Coop kissed his way down her body, stopping at her chest. She held his head to her. The feeling was overwhelming and she was drowning. He went down further, using his tongue to map out her body. Ashlee couldn’t catch her breath. At the first touch of his mouth next to her, she jumped. Coop held her down with one hand over her stomach. She rolled her head side to side. All thought left her; all those negative demands of her conscious were sent flying at the touch of him so close. His long fingers curled inside of her. She fought against the orgasm that barreled through her. Ashlee didn’t want it to end so quickly.
He continued to drive her to the brink of insanity and kissed her. “Let go, Ash,” he whispered huskily into her ear.
That was all it took to send her swirling out of control. The fall was scary but the waves of pleasure were undeniable. She screamed his name, the sound echoed off the walls. Her chest rose and fell with the power of her heart beating. He licked at her breasts while she settled back down to earth. The air cooled around her, but she still felt hot. Coop smiled up into her eyes.
“You’re beautiful when you let go,” he told her against her lips.
Ashlee blushed, pulling him closer. She worked at getting his jeans off. She pulled her hand back when she didn’t encounter any boxers or underwear of any kind. He grinned. She shook her head. “Why am I surprised?”
He shrugged. “I don’t know. Why are you?” She looked down then blushed even harder. She quickly averted her eyes from his erection. He tilted her face back toward his. “You have done this before haven’t you Ash?”
“Yeah,” her voice came out in a squeak. She closed her eyes and swallowed before she tried to speak again. “Yes, I have,” she licked her lips, suddenly acutely aware of what they were doing and of how naked they truly were. Ashlee wasn’t even talking about the lack of clothes; she meant that her guard was completely gone. “I just,” she hopped from the counter top and grabbed her towel. “I just don’t have…my experience is woefully limited.” She laughed running a hand through her hair turning her eyes to him. “Like I said before I don’t do this.”
“Do you want to have sex with me Ashlee,” he asked. She glanced at him. Her mouth watered. She wished he would put on some clothes. With Coop so naked and aroused it was hard for her to think. She bit her lip, forcing her mind to focus on their conversation and not the fact that her insides were jelly.
“Yes,” she answered. “And that freaks me out.” She paused, looking over at the shower. An idea started to form in her mind. “Water helps me relax,” Ashlee said to him.
He held out his hand to her and led her over to the shower. He turned the tap on, turning to face her. Coop leaned down and kissed her breathless. Steam filled the small space, wetting their skin, making them slick. He helped her into the shower. She walked under the spray, tipping her head toward the pounding jets. He joined her a second later. His body pressed up against hers from behind. He slid his hands down her body. She shivered, rolling her head against his shoulder. His powerful shaft was nuzzled at her back already in a condom.
She reached between them and ran her hand up and down the hard member. He sucked at her neck, placing open mouthed kisses along her skin. She sighed then gasped as his fingers entered her again. She quickened her movements on him. “Fuck,” he breathed into her shoulder. His teeth grazing the flesh as he spoke.
Ashlee reached with her other hand and took the showerhead down from its place. She turned the jets to pulse and ran it up and down his arms. He took it from her, directing the water to her sensitive nipples and the bundle of nerves at the apex of her thighs. Ashlee bit her lip. The sensation was too much, so much more than she could handle. Her nails dug into his arm and she broke once again. Coop spun her around, lifted her leg onto his hip and entered her swiftly. Her breath caught, her eyes rolled back into her head and she clawed at his strong back.
Coop drove her higher than she had ever been in her life. All those previous experiences pale in comparison to this moment, to this man. She licked at his chest, tracing the droplets of water with her tongue. Grunts, pants, broken words, and cries of pleasure filled the shower stall. She crawled up his body with his help, locking her other leg around his slim hips. The angle change caused stars to explode behind her eyes. So close to the end, she was so close to the edge. Ashlee dragged his head toward her, kissing him with all the passion that’s been building since they met over a year ago. He returned the fevered kisses.
She broke the kiss, throwing back her head when her climax hit like a freight train. “Coop,” she screamed. “Yes, oh god,” she bit her lip hard enough to break the skin. He sucked the injured lip into his mouth. She twisted her hands into his hair holding him to her.
His thrust became more frenzied the closer he got to release. She had bruises on her hips from where he was gripping her so tightly, but she loved the feeling. He wanted her that much. She pushed against his back with her ankles and he dropped his head to her shoulder. Her name exploded from his throat in a powerful yell. She relished the sound, took it inside of her, holding it in her heart.
The water went cold as they tried to slow their pounding hearts. Ashlee slid down his body on shaky legs. She couldn’t bring herself to look at him as she exited the shower. She picked up her towel, swallowing the tears as much as she could. He turned off the water and followed her out. “Ashlee,” he hesitated at the door.
She looked at him, “Yeah?” She cursed the shakiness of her voice. He took a step toward her. She shook her head. “I made my choice Coop.” She tied the towel into a knot at her breasts. “I just…”
“You just, what,” he asked coming to stand at her side. His hands gripped her shoulders.
“I just set myself up for a hell of a lot hurt didn’t I,” she tried to laugh it off but the tears fell anyway.
He wrapped his arms around her. His chin rested on her the top of her head and she buried her head into his chest. “You aren’t just a fuck to me, Ashlee,” he whispered. She hoped that was true, but didn’t know if she could believe it. “You are much more than that. I didn’t just have sex with you,” he pulled back. “I made love to you.” Ashlee’s breath caught painfully in her chest. “So if you are in for a world of hurt then so am I.”
She closed her eyes and kissed him. She put her faith in him and prayed she made the right choice.
*is nervous* um... what do you think?
