.... and be caught in the middle of a hurricane *facepalm*

I am currently in Manhattan. I have never seen this city so empty! Public transit is suspended, store fronts are boarded up. So far no rain, just really heavy winds. I am safe in my hotel off 5th Avenue (it's located in a "no flooding expected" zone). We'll see what tomorrow brings.

kinda know what you mean... I moved from coastal Virginia to the middle of NY State, and still have to deal with a hurricane. Nuts.

Stay safe!

I went to Florida once and got hit but a tropical storm downgraded from Hurricane. I checked out the rooms in the apartment for one without windows just in case.

Keep safe and thinking of you.

Well, in Florida it kinda is to be expected during hurricane season. Its still scary though. The only good thing is that NYC will see the eye of the storm which means hardly any rain compared to the regions outside of the eye. My hotel is also on the same power grid as the Empire State Buildings, so the hotel isn't expecting any outages... spending your vacation inside a hotel sucks though.

I thought you disappeared off the face of the earth, so NY in a hurrican is kind of one better, but it sucks. How long are you there for? My parents where in NY when a blizzard hit and the airports where closed, but as pensioners they didn't mind a couple of extra days and enjoyed seeing the city so empty and 'different'.

Do it like Brian? Look on the bright side? I keep fingers and toes crossed that power doesn't go out, and you'll have access to entertainment. Keep us posted if you can.

Just been incredibly busy at work lately. Not much time for checking in here :/

My mom emailed me this morning that is was snowing back home yesterday. You heard about that? Seit 40 Jahren das erste mal, dass Schnee bis auf unter 100m Höhe im Oktober gefallen ist. Freaky. They get snow, i get a hurricane.

Power is pretty safe here at the hotel. We're on the same grid as the Empire State Building. According to the hotel staff (which is absolutely wonderful btw) that power grid is triple secured and backed. They also have a generator that could go for 2 days if needed. So far no power problems, not even flickers. They did turn off the elevators though. Thank goodness my room is on the 3rd floor only!

Well, I hope this is not gonna spoil your trip and you still get to do the things you want to do. Sounds like your base is pretty safe, so at least you'll have all the creature comforts you could want.

With regards to the whether back home, my Mum as been moaning at me because they've had a lot of snow already (they're at 900m) and in October it's just way too early, normally September and October are still quite nice, with a lot of blue skies and the leaves all bright coloured. This is going to be a long winter.
