The yakuza are a pretty fascinating subject. While never as chivalrous or honorable as their mythology, it's that very mythology that causes the Japanese government and people to somewhat condone their presence, within limits. I've always had a fascination with the yakuza, and I'm not really sure why. I'm still somewhat limited in my knowledge, but I've always picked up any book or whatever having to do with them and really enjoyed learning about them. I always figured I cared more to learn about yakuza than mafia was really because of the reasons you pointed out above ("Only in Japan.....never engaging in anything that can technically be called corruption").
Always wanted to play the games, but never did. Maybe I'll play 3, after all.

He also has a blog at japansubculture.com that I subscribe to. He seems to make the point that despite police wanting to crack down on the Yaks, there doesn't seem to be any political will to create tougher laws.
