Chapter 1
As our schedule finished up, we headed backstage to rest for a bit before we went back to the dorms. I was still out of it from the game earlier.
“I can’t believe you guys went that far!” Jonghyun exclaimed laughing hysterically. “You were full on kissing for at least two seconds. Maybe more.”
“Shut up.” Minho threatened him staring at him with a deadly glare. “Look at these great prizes we got.” He lifted up the bag full of edible goodies we got from winning the events today. “You’re just jealous!”
“Am not!” Jonghyun retorted sticking his tongue out childishly.
“At least you guys had a chance to win. I was stuck sitting at the sidelines since I lost at rock paper scissors... again.” Onew whined with his arms crossed.
“True.” Jonghyun agreed feeling a little better about himself. “But still, at least you didn’t have to endure the embarrassment of that last game.”
“We could’ve done that too!” Kibum told them confidently.
“I’m not sure about that.” His partner, Jonghyun said. The two laughed as they continued to talk to Onew.
“Something wrong, Taemin?” Minho asked me worriedly. He set his hand down on my shoulder. I shuddered on impact and squirmed out of his grip.
“N-No. I’m fine.” I told him with a big smile. I left my seat and joined the others.
---
When we finally got back at the dorms Onew stepped into the shower almost immediately. Jonghyun and Kibum made themselves comfortable on the couch to watch some TV eagerly awaiting their own turns. I opted for my bed in which I promptly plopped down on. As I closed my eyes, I heard footsteps coming into the room. Having been with everyone all these years, I recognized the sound of them immediately.
“Minho-hyung?” I called out looking out from my pillow.
“Just getting changed.”
“Aren’t you going to shower first?” I asked him turning around to sit up.
“I’ll shower first thing tomorrow morning.” He laughed and rustled my hair. “Thank you for caring so much about my hygiene.” His every touch made me want to shrivel up until unseen. I could feel my cheeks starting to redden, so I hurriedly buried my face in my pillow.
Throughout my years of knowing him, I never once thought of him this way, but now every time he looked at me I felt this warm and comforting heat emanate from my heart. He was always a close friend, a hyung that I could depend on to be there for me, to support me. Still, my feelings never went further than that, at least I never thought so.
When I looked up from the comfort of my pillow, I realized he had already left probably to join Kibum and Jonghyun at the couch. I pressed my back against the back of the bed and closed my eyes. Thinking about it was weird, liking someone that I had been so close to for so long. When I really thought about it, all I could do was laugh, but it’s not like I could ignore my feelings.
Since I was going to be last to shower that night, I decided to take a nap. I slid under my covers and stared at the empty bed next to mine, Minho’s. It hadn’t hit me that we shared the same room until then and I suddenly felt butterflies in my stomach. Clenching it I squeezed my eyes shut until I succumbed to sleep.
---
“Yah, Taemin-ah.” I heard a faint voice in the background. My eyes slowly opened to find Minho’s face in front of mine. Startled I flew back, landing on the ground. “Are you okay? Didn’t mean to scare you.” He came around to where I fell and with a laughing expression helped me to my feet.
“I’m fine.” I said rubbing my back.
“You were scolding me earlier for not taking a shower. Don’t you think you should be a good example of that?” He teased me.
“I’ll take one now.” I told him. Grabbing my pyjamas from my drawer I left the room and headed to the washroom. Still feeling tired, I quickly washed myself up and brushed my teeth before returning to my room.
“That was quick.” Minho commented as I came in. He looked a little surprised as he sat on his bed reading.
“Yeah, I feel a little tired today is all.” I responded giving a little yawn. I returned to my bed and stared at his profile. He continued reading his book. I couldn’t help but stare at his concentrated expression. He must’ve noticed me though as he looked up from his book in my direction.
“Something wrong, Taemin-ah?” He questioned.
“No.” I slipped under my covers and turned to face the opposite direction. The day after, we were going to be practicing the whole day. Thinking of how I needed my rest, I closed my eyes and eventually fell asleep.
--
When I finally woke up, it took me a few minutes of rolling around before I sat up and looked around. Minho was out of bed already as usual. Considering we had no real schedules that day, we were going to go practice in the SM building’s practice room. As I started to think of what happened yesterday, I was snapped back into reality when Minho walked back into the room.
“Shouldn’t you get up now? We’re leaving in an hour.” He told me taking a seat on my bed. He rustled my hair. “Taemin...”
“Y-Yeah?” I looked at him with widened eyes. My heart started to beat quickly when I realized he was sitting so close.
“About yesterday...” He looked down awkwardly scratching the back of his head with his hand. “My competitive side just took the best of me. I’m sorry. Don’t think anything of it, okay? I just didn’t want it to be awkward between us.”
“Ah, of course!” I exclaimed. “Why would I think anything of that? We’re friends. And plus, between us guys?” I chuckled nervously.
“Right?” He laughed along but suddenly the air started to get awkward again so silence overcame us. “You should wash up now.”
“Okay.” He quickly left the room before I could even get up. I made my way to the washroom and washed up before seeing the others at the couch.
“Taemin, get dressed already!” Kibum complained. Although startled for a moment, Jonghyun slowly pet Kibum’s head to calm him down which earned him a nice punch on the arm.
“Yes, hyung.” I said emptily. I disappeared into the room and returned fully dressed a few minutes later. Grabbing our bags we left the dorm and piled into the car downstairs.
“I think this will be the one thousandth time we practice Sherlock.” Kibum nagged crossing his arms.
“Maybe it’ll be... the one thousand and one time?” Onew barged in with his cold humour. Without laughing, the four of us stared at him dumbfounded. Noticing we weren’t going to laugh anytime soon his smile turned upside down and he settled back down in his seat.
“It’s good though to practice a lot.” I commented happily. “That way the fans can see how our hard work is showing throughout all our performances!”
“Yeah, you’re right.” Kibum agreed sinking down in his seat.
Soon we reached the SM building. We got out of the car and walked in. After going downstairs and turning a few corners we came to the practice room. We charged inwards and started to move our bodies to get ready for practice.
“I’ll leave you guys here for now. The instructor should come shortly.” Our manager told us before heading out of the room. Obediently, we continued to stretch until our instructor came in.
“Everyone remembers the moves, yes?” He asked us. He settled down at the front of the room.
“Yes.” We all replied in unison. We got into position after doing a few last stretches. We lined up backwards then forward alternating throughout the line.
“I’ll put on the music in 3, 2...” Hitting the switch on the boom box, Sherlock started to play through. Clapping his hands to the beat, as our starting beat neared he started to count again, “5, 6, 7, 8...” As soon as the beat hit, we started to stretch out our arms bringing them slowly behind our backs before raising our heads. Then we spun out to our right to do the trademark screenshot dance. We continued to dance along with the song, riding the rhythm as though it came naturally. As the song came to a close, we all breathed a little harder. We spread out into a line in front of him to receive our criticism.
“It was all pretty good.” He got up from his spot and came closer to eye us out. “Key, you were a little slow with the transition after your second rap part.” He paced in front of us. “Jonghyun, during your first solo, you should put a little more exaggeration in your moves, they’re a little lazy.” Stopping in front of Onew, he said, “You missed the beat after your solo in the bridge, it looked sloppy.” Continuing down towards my end, he stopped in front of Minho, “During the chorus, you should lift your legs higher and take longer strides, there’s not enough power in your moves.” Finally, he came towards me. “Taemin, I expect no less from you. Good job.” He ruffled my hair and took his seat once more. “Again.”
We continued practice for a few more hours with our instructor coming in to re-teach us the moves he felt we needed practice on every few minutes. We heard the song so many times that we felt we would be able to sing it in our sleep in perfect pitch any time now. Still, we practiced hard to show our fans the result of our one and a half year hiatus. After those first few hours, it was time for practice on our own. We took turns analysing each other’s moves. The other members seemed especially attentive when it was my turn to monitor.
After another hour of practice by ourselves, we decided it was time for a break. We sat around in the center of the room gulping down our water bottles. Our breaths grew increasingly louder, then slowed after a couple minutes of rest. “Go get hyung, we need our lunch now.” Kibum complained shooing Onew out the door. Uncoordinatedly, Onew ran out the door to go find our manager. Suddenly, an air of silence fell on us. We spent a few minutes without a word before Kibum decided to speak again, of course.
“So... about yesterday again...” He said half jokingly. “That was a biiiiig scene. Everyone’s eyes were on you.”
“What?” Minho asked sarcastically surprised.
“You know...” Kibum leaned in closer to Jonghyun with his lips puckered as an example to his statement.
“Oh that?” Minho just laughed it off. “That was nothing. It was barely a few seconds. Not even a kiss, remember?”
Kibum’s eyes closed to slits. “Really? You really didn’t mind touching lips with Taemin?”
“Why are you going on about this? It was nothing!” I barged in. “It’s not like it meant anything...” Without knowing, my voice sounded slightly disappointed. I perked up from my hung head state to see if anyone noticed. Luckily, it seemed like no one did.
“If it was nothing, why don’t you do it again?” Kibum joked clapping his hands together as he laughed. Jonghyun joined him, slapping Kibum’s knee between chuckles.
“Okay.” Minho replied nonchalantly. Silence overcame the two laughing maniacs. They suddenly became extremely attentive leaning in as close they could without tipping over.
“Eh?” I looked at him my eyes as wide as never before. “You can’t just decide that on your own!” I pushed my hand in front of him in protest.
Grabbing my wrist, he pushed my arm to the side and leaned in closely. I clenched my eyes and mouth shut waiting for impact. I opened my left eye slightly to take a peek. His face grew closer and closer, his eyes were gently closed, his lips slightly pursed. Closing my eye, my body started to tremble almost eagerly waiting for his soft, plump lips to touch mine again. My mind went blank, but in the recess of my mind I heard a couple of gasps before darkness filled my mind once more.
