20s (so not in love)

I made a one hour dress in like three hours over three days. Heh. One hour is definitely a misnomer. Sure, the actual dress goes together super quick, but then you need to tweak it a bit to get it looking right (belt, trim, pockets, etc). Anyway, I was too late for Sunday's activities, but at least I will have something for next time. It looks okay ( Read more... )

And that's why I keep putting off anything 20's! My shoulders and hips are wide, so I'm afraid I'd be just another tall, large rectangle. :( Even if I were to significantly slim down, my bones will still be the same size. Ah well, I'll probably end up giving it a go someday. We can be rectangles together!

Yeah, no kidding. The only thing I find completely charming about this dress is how easily and quickly it went together. LOL

I think you should try it! Rectangles are the way to go in the 20s. If your shoulders balance your hips, it's still the "sweet spot" for 1920s. Jen looks great in her 1 hour dress, and I think it's mostly because the dress hangs from her shoulders so well.

Aww, I'm sorry you don't like the look! Things tend to improve with styling, especially vintage (or semi-vintage) styles. I feel frumpy in 40s until I get my hair up, my shoes on, and my lipstick red.

That said, the rectangle look sounds perfectly period to me! I'm convinced that a "good" 20s look is more about the proportions - the balance of shoulders and hips - than about objective size. I'm positive I will wear the one-hour dress very poorly because I'm such a pear shape; my shoulders aren't small, but they don't balance my hips at all. My arms don't hang straight down; they angle outward. That line turns the rectangle into a trapezoid.

Oh, I rock the rectangle. I put it on with my hat and shoes, and felt like I looked pretty authentic. Even my silver rim glasses fit pretty well with this era. I just find it completely unappealing and frumpy on me. LOL. Thinner people look pretty cute in this era, but I definitely fall in the "stout" category, as it says in the old Sears reproduction catalog that I have. The problem is my rectangle is wider than those cute, slender rectangles.

But Vee will look SO SO cute with her short bob and sassy ways, that I can suffer through it as her matronly accessory. ^_~

Ah, gotcha! But at least you're a rectangle at all! :p And Vee makes an amazing fashion accessory. ;)

Anyway, in all fairness, many people feel the same way about Regency and the "pregnant" look. And yet I love it even though it doesn't necessarily suit my figure.

So, I will take one for the team and wear 20's with everyone else. At least I have a dress now! The fabric I picked will work for summer (it is a lightweight plaid) and also look okay for winter. I just need a coat or something for cold-weather, and then I can be finished with the 20s.

Well, unless I catch the bug or something. ^_~

I've been avoiding 20's because I'm sure I wouldn't feel confident wearing it. I can't say for sure until I try, but I assume my body type isn't very suited either. But we are always our own worst critics, so I'm sure we all think you look adorable if you give us a chance to see some photos. :)

Aw, thanks. :) Yeah, I'm probably overly-critical. I'll just wait on pictures for our next event. I'll have something for my daughter by then, too.

I'm not sure it would suit me either, but I really want to try it. I figure it's not a ton of fabric or time committment-wise, so it's worth a shot! Also, maybe later 20s would have a more attractive waistline placement?

Yeah, I think that's kind of the way I'm looking at it - since I'm short on time, the one hour dress is the way to go. And now I have a 20s outfit that's 90% complete. Win!

I figure if everyone else is going to do it, I should jump in, too. It'll be fun. I don't have any patterns for the later '20s, so I'll look into that later. I'll just stick with my blocky rectangle in the meantime and just deal with it. Heh.
