In the past: one

The next morning, the last thing I wanted to do was get up. Yunho was already gone from my side. I glanced at our digital clock and saw that he still had about twenty minutes left of his paper route to go. I got up myself, after all, I had to make breakfast for everyone. I walked into the kitchen and looked through the cupboards. Nothing. Then I looked in the fridge and freezer. There was a plate wrapped in tin foil in the refrigerator, with the word “Mom’s” scribbled on the top of it with red permeant marker. It was last night’s dinner. In the freezer there was a box of Eggo waffles. I peeked inside and saw that there were three left. Perfect. I pulled out the waffles. Then I pulled down the ironing board. I went and grabbed the loaf a bread we keep on the top of the fridge. There was about half a loaf left. I laid out the three pieces of waffle and then the two pieces of bread on the ironing board, and went to work.

Presto! In less then five minutes, breakfast was ready to serve. I quickly went back into my room to pick out what I was going to wear to school today. I also picked out what I wanted Yunho to wear. I ironed both sets of clothes while I waited for my sons to wake up. Their food, though it would still taste good, was getting cold.

Soon enough, I heard one of the bedroom doors open. I peek my head through the kitchen doorway, and spotted my Minnie slowly making his way over. It didn’t take him long, since his room is located right next to the kitchen.

“Morning.” He said as he stepped into the kitchen area. He plopped himself in his chair and laid his arms on the table, then laid his head in his arms. I set down a plate with one and a half waffles on it, in front of him. His head picked up a bit at the smell. He looked at his plate, blinked five or six times, then grinned.

“If Xiah doesn’t come out in five minutes, can I have his half?”

“No.”

“You can tell him that there were only two waffles left, or I’ll tell, best if I tell him, you’re not that great at lying to Xiah.” Minnie started to slowly get up from the table. His was looking at the plates on the countertop. His eyes had zoned in on Xiah’s.

“Lie to me about what?” Xiah entered the kitchen, and Minnie quickly sat back down.

“Nothing.” He said. The front door opened then. Yunho walked into the kitchen, grinning like a mad man.

“Hello, my happy family.” The boys just looked at him. But I could tell what he was trying to do.

“Hello, Yunnie, have a good run today?” I asked in an overly cheery manner.

“Why, as a matter of fact I did, Jae Jae, thanks for asking.” He answered in the same cheery voice.

“Okay we get it, so what happened?” Xiah, asked as he became more awake.

“Do you know why I love payday?” Yunho asked, his voice as rich as ever. Xiah, just rolled his eyes.

“Because everyone loves money.” Minnie said.

“Yes, that’s true, but I also love it because I get to meet and see a lot of great people with my paper route, and do you know why I love payday during the Christmas holiday?”

“Because people are extra generous to their paper boy during the holiday season.” I said.

“Yes, yes they are. I swear to you, I must have made double what I usual make today!”

“That’s fantastic, Yunnie.”

“Yeah, Dad, that’s great.” Xiah chipped in.

“Good work, Pops, but then you just proved my point that you love payday only because of the money.” Minnie said.

“Yes, but I don’t get the money unless I meet with great people. So it’s still the people that make the job great.”

“Whatever helps you sleep at night, Dad.” We all laughed at that, and Yunho messed up Minnie’s hair. Though it was messed up to begin with, so really, he just messed it up more.

“All right now, you just hurry up and eat, boys, I really don’t feel like rushing around this morning.” I said.

“Well, you don’t have to worry about me, Mom, because I’m already done.” Minnie held up his empty plate. He then stood up and tossed it into the sink. After that, he went back to his room.

“Five bucks says he falls back to sleep.” Xiah said.

“You’re on.” Said Yunho.

“Oh, that reminds me, Xiah, did you fill out that application to Big Y, that I gave you, yet?” His look told me “no”.

Though both Yunho and I had entered the work force at very young ages, we decided that, sixteen, would be the best age for our boys to start. The age Yunho and I started working was four. Though I doubt “begging” really counts as an occupation.

“But Mom, what if my work hours interfere with soccer?”

“Isn’t soccer season over?” I asked.

“Yeah, but... but what about spring soccer?”

“You need to get a job, Xiah, it’s up to you what you want to do about soccer, but your job will come first. It’s all part of living in the adult world, sometimes we have to sacrifice the things we want to do, for the things we need to do.” Yunho said. He was speaking from experience.

“Are you sure you’re only three years older than me?” Xiah asked.

“It’s true, I amaze even myself by what I say sometimes.” He said with a big grin, though he also just contradicted Xiah’s complement.

“Why did you have to go and inflate his head, Xiah, now its going to take me all morning to get it back down to normal size.” I said. Xiah laughed that hilariously loud laugh of his.

“And I thought you liked big heads, Jaejoong.” Why? I think his head is rather small... oh, OH, my eyes widened slightly, then I threw my toast at him.

“Why you...”

“And that’s my cue to leave.” Said Xiah as he got up from the table.

“Now look what you did, you scared Xiah away.” I said.

Yunho stood up from the table and put his fingers to his lips. We were both silent as we heard the door to Xiah’s room close. I became quite serious.

“All right, Yunnie, as much as I enjoyed your little show when you walked in this morning, I still know that earning double of nothing is still nothing, so tell me, how bad is it?” I asked. Things were different when we were younger. People are always more willing to give money to a six or seven year old, when you offer to carry their groceries or mow their lawn. As we got older, we saw that we needed real jobs to keep supporting our family. But people don’t like to hire underaged kids who don’t have a work permit, something we needed “parents” to help us get.

Yunho was lucky to get a job as the newspaper delivery boy, five years ago. And I did find a part time job at the shoe store down the street, that I've been at for four years now. But four people can only live on such incomes for so long. And every year, the price of living keeps rising, as do my worries towards our futures.

“We’re going to be just fine this year, Jae. Once Xiah gets a job...”

“But don’t you think he should be able to spend his money the way he wants, since he’ll be earning it?”

“You know I would love to be able to let him do that, but...” I cut him off again.

“We are in trouble this year, aren’t we?”

“We need to just get through this winter, once you and I graduate, we can get full time jobs, and everything will get better from there.

“Yunho, I can take time off from school...”

“No, no you can’t, and you wont.”

“Yunho...”

“No one is taking time off from school... what did you end up writing for your Korean essay, anyway.”

“Don’t change the subject.” At least not to that.

“You want to keep discussing our money issues with the kids close by?” It’s true, they could come out of their bedrooms at any moment.

“Yunho...”

“So what did you end up writing for your essay?” Grrrrr.

“I need to go get ready.” I started walking towards our room, but Yunho blocked me. I really didn’t feel like getting into another fight right now. I think we had argued enough, yesterday. And even if I told him what I planned to do with my essay, or what I had written... it’s just better if we don’t talk about it right now.

“Jaejoong, what did you write about?” The sound of Minnie and Xiah racing to the bathroom, silenced us. While Yunho was watching Xiah pound on the bathroom door, since he was still standing in the doorway, I took this as my chance to get away. I took the clothes I had ironed, sprinted past Yunho (had to push him aside to do it), and into our room. Once there, I shut the door and leaned against it. I was safe for a little while. Yunho and I had learned a few years back that we should never change in front of each other on days where we needed to be somewhere at a certain time, such as school. In the seventh grade. I think we made it to school on time, once. So while I change in here, he’ll take the clothes I left him on the ironing board, and change in the bathroom.

The bike ride to school was an interesting one. (The car wouldn’t start this morning). I rode to around to stay away from Yunho, who kept chasing after me. Then Xiah took Minnie’s hat and rode off with it, so they began their own race. By the time we reached school, not only were we early, but completely out of breath. But at least we were also warm. I parked my bike and yelled goodbye to the boys as I fled for the cafeteria. There would be other kids there, who come to school early everyday... I don’t know why. What I did know, was that Yunho wouldn’t make a scene (argue with me) there. Yes, I was running away from Yunho. But only because I didn’t want him asking me about that damn essay.

I was right, he didn’t cause a scene, he just glared at me instead.

“This isn’t funny, Jae, did you, or did you not, write what I think you did?”

“Yunho, please don’t be mad.” He took a deep breath. He closed his eyes, and he started shaking his head. He was trying to make himself not mad.

“Sup, fellas.”

“Not now, Heechul.” I said.

“Why, what’s up?” I gave up, the only way Yunho wouldn’t be mad at me, was if I gave him what he wanted.

“It’s nothing really, see, I wrote this essay, and due the nature of its content, I was planing on asking Mrs. Lee if it would be all right if I didn’t read mine out loud today.” That was the truth, now I had to lie to explain to Heechul as to why Yunho was currently giving me the stink eye. I hate lying. “Now, Yunho, here, thinks I’ll just be using, or showing off, my social status to the class, but I really don't think that what I wrote is appropriate for school.”

“Then why did you write it?” Heechul asked. Yunho didn’t look mad anymore, he looked relieved. I had come up with this plan while I was at Kangin’s house. I knew it was the only way I would feel better about myself, and not hurt my family in the process.

The bell rang, school had officially started.

“If fit the assignment.” I replied to Heechul, and let the subject drop. I broke away from them as we all left the cafeteria, and I headed to my locker. Today wouldn’t be so bad. All I had to do now was show Mrs. Lee what I had written (I couldn’t even risk whispering the contents to her), and she would see why it couldn’t be read to the class. I had worried all the way here for nothing, though Yunnie didn’t help much. He really should have more faith in me.

“Hey, guess what?”

“Hey, Shindong, what?”

“We’re getting a really hot Sub today.” Oh geez.

“Oh, yeah, what class?”

“Ummm, the only class we share, Korean.” I dropped the book I had just taken out of my locker, on the floor. What!... oh wait.

“Wait, doesn’t that mean that the essays aren’t due today, since she’s not here?” Please say no. please. please.

“I don’t know, why, did someone forget to do theirs?” He asked me. “I don’t know”, sounded close enough to “no”, for me.

“Oh, no, I did it, I just think it would be better if I had an extra day is all.”

“Surrre you do. Later.” I waved Shindong goodbye and headed to my first class.

BEEEEEEP

BEEEEEEP

That’s how fast my A block class went. I could feel myself shaking as I entered my Korean class next. What if I was wrong, what if I DO have to read it out loud? Everyone was scattered about. They have no idea about the news that may reach their ears. No idea. I felt like I could vomit, that is if I had more then a piece of toast in my stomach.

“All right class, settle down,” The Sub said. “Now your teacher has left me with instructions saying that you all had essays that were due today. And she is happy to report that, yes, even though she is absent, the essays are still due today.” And cue the class groan. I could only pray we only had to hand them in, and not say them out loud.

“Do we have to still present them to the class?” Someone asked what I was fearing.

“Of course.” This can’t be happening. NOW, I could only pray that whatever order she wanted us to present us in, it had me going last. Also, there was a chance, though slight, that we might not get through all the presentations today, so if I was last, then I would have nothing to worry about... If I was last. Or even close to last. “Now she has given me the list of students in the order in which you are to present your essays in. First up is, Kim Jae Joong, then....” Oh hell no!

Who cares what she said after that. I heard all I needed to hear.
