I've found the trouble with old high school friends is that many stayed in place and never grew, and so are very close-minded. Others grew so much that they feel they are now operating on a higher plane than everyone they've ever known, so they are condescending and also close-minded because anything that doesn't agree with the path they grew along is "backwards" and (in the case of those who issued from towns like mine) "redneck."

Neither group has any thought that maybe they haven't learned all that there is to know in the world, or that other perspectives might have actual merit, so they don't bother to really reflect on anything said to them.

It's infuriating. I've lost several "friends" by trying to speak rationally to such people.

She was totally fine... until I started disagreeing with her. Then, I was insulting her without even trying. Without even directing anything at her. She was taking everything so personally. *sigh*

Can you imagine if I actually TRIED to insult her? She is so fragile I could crush her without even flexing... because I have to contend with sociopaths and drug addicts and politicians on the daily. Shoot, she is crushing herself.
