Harry Potter: Pampered jock, Patsy, Fraud. It's basically this guy calling Harry Potter, the character, out. The reasons he gives for it are interesting, especially since I agree with most of them. However, he does seem to gloss over a few of Harry's redeeming features, and doesn't take into Harry's past when slamming him for his faults ( Read more... )

I liked that article. There is a similar essay floating around somewhere that says Harry Potter is not much more than a Mary Sue character. I agree with it to a point. Which is why I much prefer fandom Harry :-)

I'm not sure if Harry can be called a proper Mary Sue, since, to be honest, he doesn't really have any spectacular talent except for flying and DADA. Plus he's got a terrible temper, is awfully self-centered, and never really thinks about anyone but himself.

On the other hand, the extraordinary luck he seems to have...gets quite annoying. Either get some skills or get the hell out. It's really getting kind of ridiculous that no one is even making an effort to teach him anything. How is he supposed to kill a genius dark wizard who has fifty years of experience over him?

Oh I was under the impression that a Mary Sure was a character who basically just comes out on top no matter what....?

On the other hand, the extraordinary luck he seems to have...gets quite annoying. You're right, it is annoying how he's getting by on pure luck. I also think that it doesnt have to be that way. He's good at flying and DADA. That's more than enough to make this story interesting and for him to use as an advantage. He's got Hermione for the brains and Ron for the, uh, back-up bravery and the being-a-normal-boy thing. I don't even think Harry needs all that luck ( ... )
