I just got in from the Farmer's Market and I'm all excited about felting. This woman, who I checked out at my store earlier today, has alpacas and had wool, socks, yarn etc for sale. I'm sorta allergic to regular wool, but alpaca feels really wonderfully lush and so far I don't seem to be reacting to it ( Read more... )

Oh, I've going to check those sites out. Knitting sounds like a great winter activity. I'm on vacation next week, I can sit by the woodstove with some yarn and attempt to be crafty. Would socks be easier than a scarf to make?

Did you ever finish that hat you were going to make of the giant hand?

I love that icon btw.

I'm pretty crafty, but I don't think I've ever heard of felting before!

I saw some felted 3-D sheep at a craft fair a couple years ago and was told they were felted, that's how I found out about it. Felting was the first way people learned to make cloth.

The alpaca lady said I could use cookie cutters to made 2-D shapes, and basically you fill a cutter with wool, and stab it a thousand times with the barbed felting needle which matts the fibers into a solid material. She made a dove in about twenty minutes while I was there.

Here's the wiki page on felting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felt

I want to make these sheep. The horses I saw were cuter than these, and even had pinto patches and stars and manes and tails.
