Was it really so long ago? I remember watching on the news when I was.... Oh god I don't know how young. I was so upset. My mom has some clips of me saying something not very ladylike about President Bush's reaction to it. I didn't even get in trouble for saying those words. It was just all so unreal, like I was watching another's nightmare on TV at school. I live thousands of miles away. I couldnt truly imagine such a storm. What do you remember?
Indeed, it was. 2005. I remember it well. I was in New Orleans at the time. I ignored the mandatory evacuation and stayed. Katrina made landfall in the early hours of the morning and I was asleep through the worst of it. By nightfall on the 29th, the levees had already been breached and much of the city was flooded. I think that what I remember most of all were the faces of those I passed in the streets that night and the overall feeling of hopelessness and despair. It was a storm unlike any other I have ever witnessed before.
My thoughts are with those in Houston now as they experience similar devastation.
I've been in contact with all of my family and friends that live there. All of them are safe and one of my friends has been on lock down at the hospital she works at. It's been heartbreaking.
I pray for them, those effected the worst in Texas. It's truly all I can do at this moment before the water crests due to the distance. During Katrina I remember we made up backpacks in school for kids our age who had everything ruined or had to move due to the destruction. I volunteered then to help, and if I can I will this time.
Yeah and their about to be hit by Tropical storm Harvey. Actually parts of Louisiana have already started to see rain from Harvey. With the pumps not working they're going to get flooded. I've been watching it on the news since it hit TX infact I had to call our hotels down there to offer assistence with getting them closed ect.
12 yrs and they still haven't fixed the levees or done anything to prevent another disaster. Mitch Landrieu needs to go. And don't even get me started on that Orange moron Trump. He's as useless as tits on a bull.
I remember it well. I moved two weeks before it hit. Even though I escaped the devastation directly, I was, and have been it seems, effected by it ever since. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Texas, and Florida, and everywhere in between.
And Athena, I agree. I cannot for the life of me figure out why they haven't done more to protect our beautiful city in all this time. It both astounds and horrifies me.
Louis, thank you for remembering, and for posting. H.
