For some time, I have stayed away from the news, esp. during the Bush administration, because of the "fawning" of the US media over a president that can't seem to do his job. Was it the spin doctors? The political pressure on news corps? It made looking at the news unbearable

Unfortunately, there are still plenty of individuals who need to be hit with one. I had to turn the local radio station off this morning because I couldn't stand to listen to the people calling in to the morning talk show. Somehow, they still think that the people in Louisiana are to blame for it all.
I don't see any need to spend a lot of time pointing fingers at specific people and arguing over who is most to blame right now, but I also think it is necessary to face up to the fact that a lot of mistakes were made, and that we have to do better next time as well as deal with the results this time.

Some say that this was a message from God punishing New Orleans for it's "wicked ways".
Frankly, I think they were kinda right. It is a message, but not for New Orleans or it's "wicked ways"...but for all of the United States. This is indeed a wake up. Not punishing New Orleans, but truly showing how F'd up we are in certain things. I am hoping that the domino effect goes into play and that some good can come out of this tragedy.

When FEMA listed the most likely catastrophes to hit the
US in the near future, an earthquake in San Francisco was
next on the list after an attack on NY and the flooding of NO.
Bush hasn't been to San Francisco since he took office,
I can't imagine we're well liked in DC. Frankly, I expect
certain circles to see it as divine retribution.
Maybe I'm wrong, but either way, I think we should be ready
to take care of ourselves.
