Dragon Age Fic: Legend

Oct 31, 2010 16:57

So, normally I don't post my own fic here, but this one, well, I want to post it wherever I can, and that amounts to about four places, one of them being here, so, well, there you go. This wiki entry and this one sort of give you an idea of the general things surrounding this specific story; it helps to know that the character you play in Dragon ( Read more... )

I adore this fic. I love your Andraste-esque Warden, and I really love how pious you've made her! It gives her so much character!

(I made a pious warden. Once. And then she turned a snarky lesbian. Oops.)

Either way, I'm really happy with this fic and I'm glad you wrote something really amazing for this challenge. <3

Seconding the enjoyment of how pious your Warden is, and how unique it makes the rest of the fic. The entire thing was lovely, and particularly your use of the Chant gave it a sense of grace and a measured quality which I think really suited the piece.

(And the "friend to burn in her place" line was very moving.)

My first idea for this was "comparing the Warden to Andraste (one legend to another) and oooh stick the Chant in there!" so I am glad to know that it worked. (I really, really want to go applaud the person who wrote the Chant--to me, it reads like Middle or Old English in translation, and has that weird translated-but-still-holding-layers-of-poetry feel to it, and I couldn't not use it.)

(I turned down friend!Morrigan's offer once, just to see what she does--and I felt really bad about it, because she seemed so betrayed! And I just--I mean, I know Morrigan wants the Old God baby for her own reasons, but there's also a sense of bullet-biting there--after all, she doesn't have any more guarantee that she'll survive the process than the Warden does, and she's willing to take that risk for the Warden on top of her own desires. And...it kind of went from there.)

Thanks so much for the review! :-)

I did manage to make it through this time without crying, so that's awesome. It's just so achingly gorgeous and the integration of the Chant and the arrogance of her tears and a friend to burn in her place and and and. It's just beautiful. So beautiful.

<3 forever, girl.

(p.s. dat dedication, <3 even moar)

I think the "arrogance of her tears" bit was what made me go from being teary to actually crying, when writing it--I realized that she's all like ONOEZ MY DEATH IS UPON ME and, uh, Riordan hasn't died yet, but he's totally going to come on, and that's, well, sad for him.

Oh, oh, I love this so much.

It's so hard to write from the viewpoint of someone truly pious in the DA universe, I think, because we're given so many examples of everything that the Chantry has ruined and broken. You've done it here, and done it so well.

I'm tjadis on ff.net, and "But A Sword" is one of my stories. I *love* the fact that it seems to have inspired more than one person in their own work. (I just got a message today from another writer, pointing me towards their own story that was inspired by it!) Thank you, and thank you for sharing!

OH HI I may have squeed a little when I saw who you were--I'm so glad you liked it! This fic would not have been as good without your example (/your Andraste being canon in the back of my mind).

I really love how well-thought-out the religion in Thedas is, and how intricately it ties into the plot, and I wanted to pay tribute to that and see what it would really look like--the whole Maker/darkspawn connection, the example of the war Andraste waged...it's just too rich to leave untouched!

Thank you so much for your kind words; they really mean a lot. :-)
