I am moving blogging operations from LiveJournal to my eponymous blog 'Dispatches from the Edge' at jackwilliambell.com.

I just posted a rant about open computing, Apple, and Steve Jobs: Endings and Beginnings. Feel free to comment here if you prefer.

Wasn't Apple always closed & proprietary? I remember hearing that complaint about the original Mac.

From a hardware perspective, yes. However, up until the IOS series of devices (iPod/iPhone/iPad) the operating system didn't keep you from loading any software onto the device you liked. Now, with Apple's App Store for the Mac it seems as though they are attempting to extend that walled garden approach to the rest of their product line as well.

We'll have to wait and see on that. However, so far I have resisted upgrading my personal Mac to OSX Lion just in case that is a Trojan Horse for the walled garden (if I can mix the metaphors). If it wasn't for the fact so much of the software I really like is Mac only I would probably switch to Linux. Luckily there are a couple of open source projects out there attempting to re-create Apple's programmer's libraries in a cross-platform manner; so there is a potential that Mac software developers could move their wares to other platforms without too much difficulty.
