The house was huge and always dark, having been empty and on the market for two years. While all the other homes on the street were decorated for the holiday with wreaths and fairy lights, it sat, plain, silent and bare. There were no children playing in the garden, no holiday letters filling up the postbox, no happy visitors knocking at the door. Anna felt sorry for the house. That is, until today.
The tree was lit and decorated, and sat squarely in the centre of the living room. Tinsel, coloured bulbs, and even a little tin soldier found homes among the branches. A little boy stood on his tip-toes, leaning forward nearly against the tree, trying to place a sparkling silver star atop the nearly finished tree.
The lake was frozen and it's glassy surface reflected the bright blue sky and the trees that stood at the edge of the water, their bare branches like fingers reaching for the scant warmth of the sun.
