glee_fluff_meme. Since I'm one biased motherfu- (SHUT YO MOUTH.), I forced one my fave ships on it. And Mike was an obvious choice because duh Harry Shum Jr. is a wizard in real life. A DANCE WIZARD. How else do you explain those magical moves?
Author's note the second: I made a weird backstory and notes for this prompt, so if there is enough interest there could be a follow-up.
Every Little Thing He Does Is Magic
The sign up sheet for the Talent Show went up today. Of course Rachel Berry’s name was occupying the first slot accompanied by her trademark gold star sticker. The fourth slot was about to be filled by Mike Chang, right after the girl that was going to play the tuba, and then the guy that going to do a ventriloquist act. He shuddered at the thought. Dummies gave him the wig.
The boy looked up and down the hall. The coast was clear. Mike picked up the pen on a string and wrote his name down, and his talent.
“You signed up? What are you going to do, sing or dance?”
“Gah, Quinn. You scared me. What are you part ninja?”
The blonde leaned in to read what he had written down. “Magic? You can do magic?”
“Shazam!” With a flick of his wrist, Mike was now holding a red rose and handed it to her in response.
Quinn smiled at the gesture. “That’s pretty impressive.” She noted, and brought the flower up to her nose to breathe it in.
“I’m glad it came out ok. Usually they smell like cupcakes.”
“What?”
“Um, what?”
“You said that they usually smell like cupcakes.”
“Did I? Maybe I said I could go for some cupcakes. There’s this really great bakery downtown. Wanna go?
“Don’t think you can distract me with cupcakes. But let’s go. I love that place.”
The pair decided to take Quinn’s car. She placed the rose on the dashboard and pulled out of the parking space.
On the way downtown, all the traffic lights were green. Quinn thought this was highly unusual but Mike didn’t seem to notice. He was just humming to himself.
“That was weird.” She found a parking space and parallel parked.
“What was?” Mike had turned toward her.
“The traffic lights. They were all green.” Quinn put the car into park and shut the engine off.
“Oh, yeah. What a lucky break.” Mike just shrugged.
They hadn’t taken statistics yet, but Quinn knew the chances of getting a green at every single intersection had to be less than your chances of getting hit by lightning or winning the lottery. “But it’s highly improbable…”
“Look! Cupcakes.” Mike pointed past her at the bakery. He then opened the passenger door and got out of the car as fast as humanly possible. But before shutting the door, he turned back and flashed the girl a smile.
Quinn got out of the car. She then crossed the street to where Mike was waiting for her in front of Mr. Frosty, holding open the door for her. Mr. Frosty was in fact owned by a woman named Debbie Frost. Most of the business came in the form of people walking in looking to buy ice cream, but came out of the store with cupcakes. Finally, Mrs. Frost decided to sell ice cream. Ice cream and cupcakes turned out to be winning combination. The two teens got in line.
“So. Can you show me another trick? After your disappearing act back there, I’m real curious to see more.” Quinn smirked.
“Uh sure. I’m gonna need a dollar.”
Quinn raised an eyebrow, but sill fished out a dollar from her purse. She put it in Mike’s outstretched hand. He held it up to the light and nodded in approval. Then folded it and slipped it into his back pocket.
“Hey!”
He grinned. “Just messing with you.” He took the dollar back out and ripped it in half. Then he ripped it further into fourths. “Ok. So I’m gonna need you to the four pieces in your hand.”
Quinn nodded her consent, and wondered what the boy standing in front of her was going to do. He then put the four pieces into her hand and closed it into a fist. Then he placed both of his hands around her own. She looked up and found Mike grinning at her.
“Ready?”
“Yes.” As soon as the word left her mouth, she felt a warmth spread from her hand to the rest of her body. It was as if nothing was wrong with the world and that she was happy. Then it was gone.
“Open your hands.” Mike had removed his hands from hers. She opened her fist. And when she saw what she was now holding she gasped and dropped the items.
The quarters, once they hit the ground, spun around before coming to a stop.
“Ta-da…” Mike stated with a flourish. He laughed at her reaction and crouched down to retrieve the fallen coins. “Lame, I know. Not much of a trick. “Mike Chang, Make Change.” He gave the quarters back to Quinn.
“That was amazing. How’d you do that?”
Again, Mike looked around. Two freshmen girls were at the counter paying for their cones. A father was asking his son if he wanted sprinkles. Everyone one was preoccupied with yumminess to pay attention to the two teens. “Can you keep a secret?”
Quinn nodded.
“Magic.” Mike gave her one of his trademark grins.
“Mike! Come on.” The blonde punched him in the arm. But then the owner, Ms. Frost herself, came out of the kitchen with a fresh batch of cupcakes.
“Aren’t those your favorite?” And indeed they were. Chocolate with mallowfluff frosting. The girl at the counter had finished with the costumer in front of them and gave them a smile. Quinn recognized the girl from her math class, but couldn’t remember her name.
“Hey Janis. Right out of the oven. Nice. Could we maybe get two of those.” He nodded at the freshly baked goods. “And half a dozen Snikcerdoodles? Thanks.”
“How did you know those where my favorite? Is mindreading one of your tricks too?” Quinn asked as Mike pulled out his wallet to pay for everything.
“No, I’m just really observant.” Janis gave him back his change and their order. “Thanks Janis. See you around.” She smiled at Mike and waved bye.
“Yay. Mission accomplished! What?” The two had made their way out of the bakery and where now standing outside. Quinn was just watching the boy standing in front of her.
“I’m trying to figure you out.”
“Well, I’m just Mike Chang. Dancer, Glee clubber, and holder of baked goods.” He held up the bag of cupcakes and cookies.
She laughed. “Let me give you a ride to your house? You bought the cupcakes. It’s only fair.”
“Well, I wanted to buy the cupcakes. For you. And it’s ok. I know a short cut.” Mike handed her the bag. “Oh wait. Let me grab a sniekerdoodle for the road. They’re my favorite.” He winked at her, and opened the bag he was still holding. He took out a cookie and gave her a salute. “So um. I’ll see you tomorrow?”
“Sure. I’d like that.” She took the bag. She nodded and grinned. “Bye, Mike.”
“Bye.”
Turning to cross the street, Quinn started to think about what just happened. She was still trying to figure out how Mike had done the trick with the dollar. Not once had she closed her eyes or opened her fist. And earlier that rose had come out of nowhere. Mike also knew what her favorite cupcake was. He was a nice guy, but he was hiding something.
Suddenly there was a shout and the screech of tires. Mike was running towards her, in a race against the car baring down on her. The blonde closed her eyes, waiting for the impact.
But it never came.
Instead what Quinn felt was two strong arms around her and felt that strange warmth coursing through her body. When she opened her eyes again, she was standing on the fifty-yard line of the deserted McKinley High football field. Well, deserted except for her and Mike Chang.
“Are you ok?” Mike was holding her steady. She released her death grip on the bag from Mr. Frosty’s.
Quinn nodded. She was fine, despite almost being hit by a car. Still shaking, she finally got her mouth to form words. “Did- did we just apparate?”
“No?” Mike answer shook her out of her near death stupor.
“Seriously? There’s no cupcakes here to distract me, Mike. And don’t even try lying.” Quinn shrugged out of the boy’s grip, and waited for him to respond.
“Well, if you’d let me finish, I’d tell you we … teleported. Does it look like my first name is Harry?” Mike looked a little nervous.
“I knew it. Magic is real!” Instead of freaking out, Quinn was excited. She was a fan of the Harry Potter books when she was younger. She had taken them out of the library and read them late at night with a flashlight. And she was disappointed when her Hogwarts letter didn’t come. She remembered playing Harry Potter with Finn. (She always made him be Hagrid.) But then she got older and stopped believing when the world started to let her down.
“I guess I wasn’t being too subtle.” Mike rubbed the back of his head.
“You had me questioning my sanity. I mean magic? But then this happened, proving I was right.” Quinn clapped her hands together and looked smug.
“Quinn, please you can’t tell anyone. We could get into a lot of trouble if they found out you knew.” Mike grabbed her hand, interrupting Quinn’s happy dance.
“Oh my God. Do you have to obliviate me now?”
“Can you stop with the Harry Potter for one second? This is pretty serious. There are laws about this. They’d bind my powers and they’d ruin you. You really should have been looking both ways when you crossed the street.” He pressed his palms into his eyes.
“Well you shouldn’t have been using your powers to flirt with me!” Quinn fumed. She couldn’t believe that he was blaming her. He was the one being reckless and showing off.
“Well you should have stopped being so-so gorgeous!” Mike shouted and threw his hands up.
“You think I’m gorgeous?” Quinn hadn’t been expecting that. Ever since she had given birth to her daughter Alice, most of the guys treated her like she was untouchable.
“I mean yeah. You are. I’ve always thought so. Always.”
“I- Thank you. For everything.” Quinn blushed.
He gave her a hopeful grin. “We should go get your car.” He stepped in close to the girl. She closed the gap, leaving little space between them.
“I better hold on tight then.” The blonde then put her arms around him, anticipating the return of the warm feeling. Mike returned the embrace.
“Well, I hope I can concentrate with such a gorgeous passenger. It’ll be your fault if we end up in like, Albuquerque” Quinn smiled into Mike’s chest, and tucked her head under his chin.
“Really need to thank you properly for saving me.”
“I’d save you. Every time.” Deep down, she knew that was true.
“You know, I won’t tell any one. I’ll always be your secret keeper.” The warmth was back. Quinn closed her eyes.
“I trust you.”
And then they were gone.
