My friends are losing their baby today. They're 19 weeks pregnant. Water broke a day and a half ago, fever started last night.

They've spent the last week talking to baby and feeling his kicks in reply, but it's another two weeks to even the barest chance of viability.

That is my pretty much story with the pregnancy before William, after 10 years of trying with fertility treatments and acupuncture, I finally got pregnant and then delivered at 20 weeks. Completely devastating. I feel for them. I am sure it will be really, really hard for them for a long time. Leaving the hospital, after going through labor and delivery, without a baby - I don't wish it on anyone.

Much love to them!

apart from ^^ i have a friend who recently delivered at 21 weeks because her anatomy scan showed the baby had potter's syndrome and never would have lived (no kidneys, no bladder, underdeveloped lungs, almost no amniotic fluid) so she chose to induce. it is awful, i send my condolences.

An acquaintance of mine carried a non-viable baby to term (dwarfism that prevented lungs inflating). So dreadful, to know your baby can't live. No matter which choice you make, there's no escaping it.

This today was a perfectly healthy baby, but mom was too ill. She had her thyroid removed years ago, and the pregnancy (her first) revealed that she's got underlying kidney disease. She was so anemic she was in between units of a transfusion when her water broke. They won't risk another pregnancy.

Oh no, the friends who changed their Facebook pics to ultrasound pics? Those friends? Oh no. I'm so sorry.

A friend from playgroup got pregnant unexpectedly with her third and then lost the baby around 17 weeks. She would have been due in May. I had to scribble out her due date on my kitchen calendar. Ouch.
