[ From here. ]

The apartment he chooses is big enough for himself, a cat, and perhaps another human. He thinks the extra space is unnecessary. He feels otherwise. The walls are a drab off-white color and bare, the furniture simple. They will do for now. Jack nods, satisfied, as he explores the rooms. Now, if one of these doors opens to Milliways-- ( Read more... )

Now that she's out of the cells and free of the curse, there's a few people Mary Anne needs to see.

So there's a girl knocking on Jack's door, looking tired but still holding it together.

"Ta-da."

With a flourish, she hands the glasses over.

Then the red liquid is poured artfully into both glasses, and Jack hands one glass over to Mary Anne. Not one drop is wasted by spilling or careless pouring. Jack knows his wine. Jack loves his wine.

Mary Anne's more of a hard liquor girl, but she is not without a sense of culture.

"So," she says, raising her glass, "to the apartment, the job and the city of New York. May they all treat you right while you're gone."

She may not be able to open the wine, but she's got a knack for toasts. He always said so.

"Cheers to that." He clinks his glass against hers with a light force; the sound the glasses make is crisp, and Jack raises his own glass to his lips, taking an appreciative sip.

She drinks, making a faint sound equal parts surprised and pleased.

"You've got good taste."

"And you do just fine."

She takes another drink. "Any idea how long you'll be gone?"

"No idea. I figured I'd just--" He leans against the drawer, looks down into his glass. "--I'd just listen to my heart. I'll know when it's time to return."

Her lips quirk. "Not a bad way to play things."

She swirls the wine in her glass. "Any idea how fast time runs over there, compared to here?"

It's a question worth asking in this place.

He tilts his head. "Never considered that. Haven't asked Mark, yet."

She shrugs. "Just curious. It runs faster at home for me; couple days here is a week there."

There is the subtle implication that it can also work the other way around. And the even subtler one that people will be waiting for him.

But will it be the person he wants?

He takes another sip of his wine.

"I'll need all the time I can get."

Who knows? It might be.

She smiles softly. "And you'll have it. Not like Mark's gonna kick you out of the building, right?"

Although there's always the danger of trickers showing up at your door to stuff you in a sack, but shhh.

Jack needs friends who have no inclination to kidnap him.

"No." Pause. "I could always use some help decorating it."

But those would be boring friends!

She laughs. "Not sure I've got any decorating skills, but if you just need someone to hold up the other end of the curtains, I'll oblige."
