Ocarina of Time (videogame): Spoils of War

Summary: An introspection of the fight with Dark Link in four movements.

i.
Link cannot feel his fingers. He cannot feel his hands. He cannot feel his arms. He can only feel the water over his head, filling his mouth and nose and lungs; the ice cold grip of Dark Link's hands around his throat, holding him under the water. He can only hear his opponent's laughter, and the frantic beating of his own heart.
Though it takes all his strength to do it, he tightens his grip on the hilt of the Master Sword.
ii.
There is blood on his hands, on his face, on his legs. The Master Sword has been cast away, and is now lying on the sands of the small island. Dark Link's face is the perfect substitute for a punching bag; and Link always did like to work with his hands.
His gauntlets are tacky with blood, but he can't seem to stop himself from pounding the other man with his fists. Even after he feels something in Dark Link's face break, resistance becoming less and less with each blow.
When he finally does stop, he looks down at the ruin he has made of his adversary's skull. He drags himself off the body, and throws up.
iii.
Somehow, he isn't very surprised when his shadow leaps at his back as he approaches the door. Instead, he sidesteps Dark Link's attack, and clamps an arm around the demon's throat. Choking and snarling, his opponent lets out a strangled scream when Link pierces his kidney with his sword.
He doesn't make anymore noise after Link firmly takes his head and twists, breaking his neck.
iv.
When Morpha is only a stinking pile of slime and poisoned water on the floor, Link finds himself thinking of his opposite, in that strange mist-filled room where the only land was a small island harboring a dead tree. He slumps to his knees and begins to weep, unable to tell Navi why.
