My favorite way to describe our market economy is to say that it requires us to believe in faeries. Every time I hear the term "market confidence" I am reminded of this. The market only works if everyone believes in it. This reminds me of the line from Peter Pan when Peter tells Wendy "Every time someone says 'I don't believe in faeries', one dies"

Do you believe in faeries?

I personally believe in some pretty whacked-out stuff to some, but faeries ain't amongst it ...

I don't think I've really believed in money since, roughly, puberty :-)

This is a common topic of discussion for at least two of the activists groups I hang out with. Something has to change.

Know any better models?

Let's go back to the barter system: concrete goods for concrete services. :) Value then becomes relative, of course, but I think it's a much more useful system.
