I use Adobe Premier Pro for all my multimedia needs. (Software is kinda expensive)
But for freeware, try out DVDVideoSoft http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/
It's pretty reliable. :D

I use the Freenake video converter ^^ (http://www.freemake.com/)
It's free and you can convert to various formats with it =)

You need to try a few times to choose your settings, once it's done, it works perfectly
