Ooh, physics!

Point One: I have had to replace the two instances of the phrase 'pure energy' in my novel with 'plasmatic energy'. Apparently pure energry is not an actual thing.

Point Two: Scientists have NO IDEA how lightning is created. How awesome is that!

Oh the random things you learn just from being a writer!

*blinks* If pure energy isn't a thing, what is there instead? Is energy inherently impure?

Now I wish my high-school physics teacher had actually taught us something rather than spending the first two weeks of class mumbling about "vectors" and the entire rest of the year holed up in his walk-in closet drinking coffee and smoking while we did the homework for our other classes.

Uhm, I think energy has to be a type of energy - e.g. kinetic, thermal, potential, electric, etc - and therefore can't be just pure energy.

Uhm, well, I had read through this page on wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning

I can't find the theory you're describing. It sounds plausible in most ways but I don't really understand how friction between air alone could cause thunder in sudden sharp bursts. If air fronts are colliding it should surely be an extended sound as they rake over each other, assuming of course that air colliding would make any sound at all.

Plus thunderstorms move, so does that men the collision point of the storm fronts is moving? Feels a bit odd to me.

The wikipedia page has lots of fun theories including cosmic rays from space! :)
