Hyperbole and a Half, and I feel compelled to share. The drawings make me laugh so hard that I come close to wetting myself.

About 5 times as many as you think you need. They are filthy creatures.
You may also want a baby noise-hole plug, and possibly a nursing pillow, because they really do help when your arm feels like it's going to fall asleep.

Ohh, I *do* need a nursing pillow... The jury's still out around here, re: pacifiers. Some people say they're bad; some people say they're not, and I'm trying to figure out what's hooey and what's not. Then again, I was never given one, and ended up sucking my thumb til I was eight (I do not recommend this.)

I agree strongly with #2. There will be showers and gifts, and you can always guilt people into giving you the goods! Make sure that the showers are themed, like everybody at one gives $10-25 and you can put it towards buying the car seat/crib/stroller, instead of leaving it open ended and getting 37 burping towels. Which you might end up needing, but those are cheap and you can get them on your own as needed.
Also, remember that you are a knitter/crafter, as are your friends, so they will probably be making you crap.
Of course, there are a lot of internet communities that can give you info, like http://community.livejournal.com/naturalliving/5519562.html Just make sure to weed through, well, the internet crap that always surfaces.

Freecycle.org is a great and wonderful thing, and kid's clothes are a frequently-listed item.
