Isabel and Jack returned to the dorms only when the approaching night made it too difficult to continue their search. They'd started in the dorms, moved on to town and when he wasn't found there had moved on to the preserve.

Jack avoided her eyes, looking intently around the room as if Cedric might be hiding in the shadows. "We didn't find him," he said, somehow feeling the need to state the obvious, as if it might change something.

"I know." The worry of earlier was starting to turn into fear, but she kept it hidden to avoid panicking Jack. "There's other places we need to check. He could have gotten sucked into that damn locker. He could have been turned into a small furry animal. We'll talk to the principal tomorrow. Maybe the security feeds saw something."

"No. If he got turned into an animal, he'd have found me." Jack could speak from experience. Even as a fox he'd recognised Cedric, had sought him out. "If he's in the locker I'm going in after him," he said firmly, gaze wandering back to Isabel. "But there's another possibility." One he didn't really want to think about.

"No you're not," Isabel said firmly. "There's no guarantee you'd wind up where he is. And it hasn't eaten anyone permanently in a long time. We just need to wait for him to come out." She walked over and slipped her arms around his waist, offering what comfort she could. "What other possibility?"
