Buffy was having sunscreen issues again. She just could not reach that bit on her back. It was sad, really. Someone should save her before she twisted her elbow out of joint.

"I'd help, but I'm not sure I should risk your boyfriend wanting to punch me in the face again," Alec said dryly as he paused beside her.

"But he's not here and I need help now," Buffy pointed out, looking up at him with huge eyes and a pout. "You don't want me to turn all red and get cancer and die, would you?"

Alec snickered. "Well, when you put it that way." He held a hand out as he moved closer. "C'mon, hand it over."

Buffy beamed and handed him the sunscreen. She flipped over on her stomach with a happy sigh. It was lovely and warm, and she could smell food being cooked near by. This was going to be a great 4th of July.

"You're the bestest friend ever."

"I'm a freaking saint," Alec said, shaking his head as he knelt down on the edge of her towel to avoid the sand.

"U-huh," Buffy agreed, smiling. She was quiet for a moment, just enjoying herself, then asked curiously, "How do you usually celebrate 4th of July?"

She turned over on her side to giver him a surprised look. "None? Not even Christmas or Halloween or Thanksgiving?"

"Nope," he informed her, sitting back on his heels with a faint smirk.

"Birthday?" she tried, which at least involved prezzies and cake, even if it wasn't an actual holiday as such. "New Years? Passover?"

Alec shook his head and made use of the leftover lotion on his hands, rubbing it over his forearms absently. "None of them either."

"But that horrible!" Buffy sat up, eyes wide. She still couldn't quite believe it. Surely everyone celebrated some kind of holiday? "You've never gotten any gifts? Or cake?"

"No," he said, and smirked a bit as he rested his hands on his thighs. "They weren't really big on treating us like people."

Buffy looked very puzzled. She put her shades on to keep the sun out before asking. "Who weren't? Did you get balls of string instead of cake?"

He rolled his eyes. "The people who made me," he explained, semi-briefly. "They wanted soldiers, so they made me and a bunch of others, and never let us have Christmas."
