Room 406, Sunday morning

Jun 11, 2006 08:19

Despite waking up several times still feeling the mummy's claws digging into her neck, Isabel had slept reasonably well. It had helped that each time she woke up, there was someone to hold onto as she went back to sleep. She doesn't have to be anywhere until cheerleading practice, and given how stiff and sore she feels, Isabel isn't certain she's ( Read more... )

The walk from Parker's room to Isabel's had given him time to calm down a bit, but he was still fuming when he knocked on her door.

Isabel was warm, cozy and half asleep when she heard the knock. With a sigh, she slipped from the bed and opened the door. When she saw the look on Jack's face, she stepped into the hallway and closed the door behind her. "Hi," she said quietly.

"I'm not allowed in your room anymore?" Jack asked, cataloguing each of her injuries: bandaged neck, scratched hands, and she was moving like she was hurting. "That why you didn't tell me you were going out to hunt mummies?" He was trying to keep the anger out of his voice, but he couldn't hide it completely.

Oh crap was Isabel's first thought. The second was the sudden realization that this must be how Michael felt every time she yelled at him after he did something stupid. "Jack, I'm sorry," she said simply, as she reached out to touch his arm.

Jack stepped back, pulling away from her touch, and crossed his arms in front of him. "So am I, Isabel. Seriously. I can't help but think you don't trust me. And that kind of hurts." He stared at her, expressionless. "If you did, you would have told me. If you did, we wouldn't be standing in the hallway."

"We're standing in the hallway because Greg is sleeping in there. Okay?" She leaned against the door, cfeeling every ache in her body. "And I didn't tell you because...I don't know. I wasn't in charge and I'm not used to be able to depend on other people and I wouldn't want you to be put in a position where you were hurt." Isabel closed her eyes and sighed. "I'm sorry," she repeated.

Jack's eyebrows rose and he glanced at the door. "Oh." Looking back at her, he sighed. "Isabel, damn it. You need to tell me these things. Even if you can't tell me details, tell me something."

Shaking his head, he moved closer and closed his hands around her shoulders. "You don't have to protect me, I'm not dumb enough to go running into danger. And if something had happened to you, I wouldn't have known."

Jack stepping closer made it easier to poke him in the ribs. "Not like that you big dope." She stepped closer as well, sliding her arms around his waist and leaning against him. "I just...didn't want to be alone. I was afraid I'd have nightmares. And I did."

"I'm sorry," she repeated yet again. "You're right. But I'm okay really. Just a little banged up."

He could not stay mad at her in the face of that. "I didn't think it was anything else, Izzy." He pulled her closer, gently folding his arms around her. "And I'm glad he was there for you. But you have to promise you'll tell me if it happens again, all right? I want to be able to worry about you, so I can feel relieved when you come back safely."

"I promise," she said. "It's nice to make people worry. Well, not nice. But it's nice to know they worry because they care." Still leaning against him, Isabel yawned.

"Uh huh. You realise that makes no sense, right?" he asked, laughing softly. "But okay. As long as you promise." Pressing his cheek against her hair, he sighed then pulled away. "Go back to bed, Izzy. You wouldn't want Greg to get lonely."

"It made sense in my head," she said with a small laugh. "But I promise. I it won't happen again." Isabel kissed his cheek before stepping back and opening the door. "I'll see you later?"

Jack smiled gently at her as she kissed his cheek. "Count on it." His smile faded as she shut the door, and he dropped his head to rest against it, closing his eyes. After a minute he took a deep breath, opened his eyes, and headed down the hallway for the stairs.

Inside the room, Isabel quickly found the bottle of Tylenol Dr. Reid had given her and took a few to help with the stiffness. She climbed carefully into the bed and smiled when Greg's arm automatically wrapped around her. Within minutes she was back asleep.
