New Corset- A Friendly Comission!

Dec 23, 2010 01:19

A little while ago my friend katlaoesk approached me about making her a corset and skirt for her graduation. Today I sat down and did all of the drafting and mock-up sewing. I am going to see her over the holidays and we are going to have a fitting. Fingers crossed everything goes smoothly!!!

Oooh...pretty.

I agree, $67! Eeek! But....sometimes one cannot deny the fabric lust.

Oh it's so bad, that is my favorite shade of blue and every time I see it...

That store is so weird, it's Like Britex with the exorbitant mark-up. Another weird thing that happened; the lady was kinda snippy while cutting strips/samples of the laces for me, saying they were too expensive. She relented when I said they were to to color match (Held up swatch) and show to a client. Later when checking out with the silk satin I asked if they had a student discount. She said no, and that they don't usually give samples to student either (eying the lace samples) I just said ok and reminded her they were for a client.

Afterwords I was like, wow lady, way to leave yourself open to an age/student discrimination lawsuit. I can understand them not wanting to give swatches to students (Who want them for projects, and don't intend to buy the fabric) but last time I checked that was still a no no legally.

Yeah, that really is bad. I don't get why sales people are snippy, especially in places with huge mark ups. I mean, at Joann's you figure...you get what you pay for. But somewhere like Britex, I expect service. *sigh*

I agree that you definitely open yourself up for a lawsuit if you're like "we only do this for certain customers". Ugh. I mean, I do understand not wanting to give people stuff who will never buy, but jeeze...

This may be part of why I buy so much stuff online now. (I love just dyeing Dharma fabric, which has some fairly nice, not too expensive silks. There's also some good stuff up at Fabric.com, and I bought some awesome brocades from Good Orient.) I just get so annoyed at lack of selection or crazy mark ups.

I keep meaning to try Dharma, but my ability to dye things right now is kinda low :( All I hear are goo things about them!
I have never heard of good orient before?

My favorite place is Peidmont fabric in Oakland. They have the quality stuff of Britex, but a friendly staff and prices that make sense. Also http://www.puresilks.biz/store/index.php
